The UDPS says its planned May 4 march to the U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa will demonstrate support for Washington’s sanctions against former DRC President Joseph Kabila, according to a local report.
UDPS Secretary General Augustin Kabuya said the party had submitted a memorandum to the embassy and wants Monday’s mobilization to show that “the people” support the U.S. administration’s action.
The march follows the April 30 decision by the U.S. Treasury Department to sanction Kabila over alleged support for M23 and the Congo River Alliance/AFC. The U.S. State Department also described the measure as part of efforts to address threats to stability in eastern DRC.
For the ruling party, the next step is political mobilization in Kinshasa. The planned march is expected to turn the memorandum into a public show of support for Washington’s position, while keeping pressure on figures accused by U.S. authorities of fueling instability in eastern Congo.
The sanctions come amid continued regional concern over the M23 conflict and the wider security crisis in eastern DRC, where armed groups and political-military coalitions remain central to diplomatic and security discussions.
