Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has congratulated the Democratic Republic of Congo's national football team following their impressive 1-1 draw against Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the performance as a demonstration of the strength and resilience of African youth. The message came after the Leopards secured a valuable point in their Group K opener on June 17.
In a statement published on X, Ndayishimiye praised the Congolese side for what he called their exemplary determination, remarkable talent, and fighting spirit against one of Europe's football powerhouses.
“You have defended the colours of the sub-region and of all of Africa with exemplary determination, remarkable talent and a fighting spirit that honours our continent on the world stage. By your courage on the field, you demonstrate the strength and resilience of African youth,” the Burundian leader wrote.
The president said the result carried significance beyond football, describing it as a symbol of unity, pride, and hope for both the East African Community and the wider African continent. He also extended his support to Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and wished the Leopards success in their remaining World Cup fixtures.
The draw marked one of DR Congo's most notable World Cup results in recent years. Portugal struck first through João Neves in the opening stages of the match, but the Leopards responded strongly, with Yoane Wissa scoring the equalizer before halftime. The Congolese side then held firm to secure a point against the European giants.
The result has been widely celebrated across Africa, with leaders, fans, and football observers praising the Leopards' resilience and discipline. It also strengthened hopes that African teams can make a deeper impact at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
For DR Congo, the performance added momentum to a tournament campaign that has already generated significant national pride, particularly with President Tshisekedi present in Houston to support the team during their opening match.
