President Félix Tshisekedi has promised stronger support for Congolese fans if the Leopards advance at the 2026 World Cup, after DR Congo’s historic 1-1 draw with Portugal in Houston, according to 7sur7.
Speaking to members of the Congolese diaspora in the United States, Tshisekedi said the result should strengthen national unity rather than deepen political division. He urged Congolese abroad to remain attached to their country and reject messages that, in his view, weaken national cohesion.
The president also addressed concerns around ticket access for Congolese supporters. He said more efforts would be made to improve conditions for fans and suggested that additional tickets could be sought if the Leopards qualify for the next stage.
DR Congo’s draw was a major sporting moment for the country. FIFA said Yoane Wissa’s equalizer gave the Leopards their first-ever World Cup goal and point, 52 years after the country’s previous appearance as Zaire in 1974.
Tshisekedi framed the result as a symbol of resilience for a country facing long-running security challenges. He said DR Congo had “stood up to Cristiano Ronaldo,” presenting the performance as proof of dignity, pride and national determination.
Across DR Congo, the result sparked celebrations from Kinshasa to cities in the east. The supporters gathered in fan zones, homes and streets after the final whistle, with Wissa’s goal becoming a defining image of the night.
For the Leopards, the next challenge is to turn the emotional lift into a stronger group-stage campaign. For Tshisekedi, the message after Houston was clear: the team’s performance should become a rallying point for Congolese unity at home and abroad.
