Maurice Ogeta, who spent nearly two decades protecting the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, has been appointed as Advisor on Security Affairs in the Mombasa County Government. Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced the appointment on Thursday, saying that the role was created following new positions established by the Mombasa County Public Service Board.

Nassir described Ogeta as a seasoned security professional whose experience spans local, regional and international assignments, including his long service to Odinga, and said this institutional knowledge would strengthen public safety efforts in the coastal county as First reported by Tuko.co.ke

In the same statement, Nassir introduced Kenyan actor Ken Ambani as Advisor on Creative Arts, a post aimed at reviving Mombasa’s creative sector. The governor noted that Ambani’s firsthand industry experience would help the county support artists and grow the creative economy for the benefit of youth and the wider community. Both advisory roles are part of a broader organisational restructuring undertaken by the county and have been approved by the county public service board.

Ogeta is widely recognised for his loyalty to Odinga and was often seen beside the veteran politician during rallies and official engagements. He previously worked closely with the late party leader and remained with him until Odinga’s death in October 2025.

During Odinga’s state funeral in October 2025, President William Ruto publicly praised Ogeta’s dedication and said the government would ensure that those who served Odinga would continue to help preserve his legacy; Ruto specifically told Ogeta that he would “stand guard” with the government to look after Raila’s legacy. While Ruto’s pledge has not yet translated into a national appointment, Ogeta’s selection by Mombasa County reflects the high regard in which he is held by political leaders.

The governor said Ogeta’s appointment meets legal requirements and that he is confident the new advisor will help address security challenges facing the county. Ogeta’s role will involve advising the county executive on security policies and coordinating with national agencies to enhance public safety. The appointment underscores Mombasa’s effort to tap experienced professionals into county governance while recognising individuals who have served the nation at high levels.
