Kenya’s political class marked January 7, 2026 the first birthday of Raila Amolo Odinga since his deathwith tributes extolling the veteran opposition leader’s commitment to unity and democracy. The day, which would have been the former prime minister’s 81st birthday, was observed three months after he succumbed to a cardiac arrest while receiving medical treatment in Kochi, India.

Politicians across party lines and members of the Odinga family used social media and public statements to reflect on his legacy, urging the country to uphold the values he championed as reported by The standardmedia.

Tributes from national leaders

President William Ruto led the messages of remembrance. Mr. Odinga taught that the country should always come before individual ambition and praised him for choosing stability over chaos and unity over division. Mr. Ruto urged Kenyans to prioritise the common good and keep faith in the national dream.

Other prominent figures echoed similar sentiments. Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper party, described Odinga as a towering national figure whose contributions to Kenya’s democracy will endure for generations.

Edwin Sifuna, secretary‑general of the Orange Democratic Movement, said the country paused in mourning and gratitude to celebrate the life of “the most iconic leader” it has produced, adding that Odinga’s eight decades represented courage, sacrifice and an unyielding belief in freedom and justice.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o noted that the posthumous birthday should be a day of contemplation rather than celebration, calling Odinga Kenya’s “political colossus” and Africa’s democratic conscience. He urged citizens to defend the ideals of justice and equality that Odinga championed.

Messages from family and regional leaders

The Odinga family released an emotional statement of thanks on the occasion. Published in several Kenyan media outlets, the family said the day was reflective and deeply emotional. They expressed gratitude to those who supported them during the mourning period, singling out President Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their assistance.

The notice, which was shared in local newspapers, also thanked funeral committees, heads of state from across Africa and medical teams in Kenya and India.

The message emphasised that the family found solace in the widespread outpouring of love for the man many Kenyans affectionately called Baba.

Commemoration events

A commemorative gathering on Kenya’s coast was organised by Ali Hassan Joho, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. Joho said the event, dubbed “The Coastal Salute,” would honour Odinga’s life and teachings, emphasizing that his journey showed resilience requires courage to face struggles and that his vision lives on in those he mentored. He stressed that true leadership is measured by the generations awakened and empowered by a leader’s example.

Although some reports mentioned planned remarks by other officials, statements attributed to leaders not corroborated by multiple reputable sources have been omitted.

Background on Raila Odinga

Raila Amolo Odinga was born on 7 January 1945 in Maseno, Western Kenya, to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Juma Odinga. He became a central figure in Kenya’s pro‑democracy movement, spending nearly a decade as a political detainee under the one‑party regime and later leading the coalition government as prime minister from 2008 to 2013.

Odinga championed constitutional reforms that culminated in the 2010 Constitution, ran for the presidency five times and mentored a generation of political leaders. He died on 15 October 2025 in Kochi, India, after suffering a cardiac arrest while receiving medical treatment. His death, at age 80, prompted a week of national mourning and a state funeral with full honours, as announced by President Ruto.
