Burundians in Belgium commemorated the 54th anniversary of the 1972–1973 killings against Hutu communities in Burundi, with participants in Brussels renewing calls for wider international recognition, according to a Burundi Forum report.
The ceremony took place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, in the presence of Burundi’s ambassador to Belgium, Ntahiraja Thérence. Organizers and members of the diaspora gathered after a mass at Saint-Joseph church in Anderlecht, later sharing testimonies, photographs and memories of victims.
The commemoration also recalled the killing of former king Ntare V Ndizeye on April 29, 1972, and the violence that followed. The source report says the events caused more than 500,000 Hutu deaths and more than one million refugees, figures that remain higher than many external estimates.
Burundi’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission said in 2021 that the 1972–1973 crimes against Bahutu constituted genocide, a conclusion later adopted by Burundi’s parliament, according to the Burundi Senate and Anadolu Agency.
For the diaspora, the next step remains international recognition and continued remembrance. The Brussels ceremony placed that demand at the center of its message, linking memory, justice and the unresolved legacy of Burundi’s 1972–1973 violence.
