The Main Hunters: Lions and Spotted Hyenas
The scientific answer to “who hunts wildebeest?” begins with lions and spotted hyenas. A Serengeti study of age and sex patterns identifies them as the migration’s two principal wildebeest predators and shows why easy slogans fail: the age classes taken can vary with season, habitat and population conditions. Predators do not simply remove “the old and weak” in a uniform way (Arriaza et al., 2015).
Lions: access matters more than sheer herd size
Lions are stalk-and-ambush hunters. Sixteen years of radio-tracking and kill data in southeastern Serengeti showed that, at fine scales, lions fed where prey were more catchable rather than merely most abundant. Erosion banks, vegetation, water and other landscape features can create cover or constrain prey movement (Hopcraft, Sinclair and Packer, 2005, pp. 559–563). The Journal of Animal Ecology paper explains why a smaller herd near a drainage line or kopje may offer better hunting possibilities than a vast herd spread across open short grass.
For travellers, the lesson is observational. Do not stare only at the densest column. Scan shade, drainage edges, taller grass and rocky outcrops. A lion lying still is not necessarily “doing nothing”; position and patience are part of the hunt.
Spotted hyenas: hunters, not just scavengers
The scavenger stereotype badly misrepresents spotted hyenas. Serengeti hyenas hunt migratory ungulates and may commute long distances from clan territories to concentrated prey before returning. The long-running Serengeti Spotted Hyaena Project documents how seasonal wildebeest, zebra and gazelle movements reshape their foraging.

Hyenas are endurance-oriented, coursing hunters. They can identify an individual from a moving herd and pursue it in the open; group size and circumstances influence the contest. Lions also scavenge, and both species may displace or steal from the other. A carcass attended by hyenas therefore does not prove they scavenged it, just as lions beside a carcass do not prove they made the kill.
Crocodiles, Drowning and the River-Crossing Myth
Nile crocodiles are genuine ambush predators at the Mara River. They wait where current, bank shape and crowded entry points can compromise an animal. Yet the river story is not simply “crocodiles kill wildebeest.”

Research in the Kenyan section of the Mara documented mass drownings in at least 13 of 15 years studied. From 2011 to 2015, the mean was about 6,250 carcasses annually, although the number varied widely. The authors linked these events to an interaction among river discharge, bank shape, herd size and possibly tourist behaviour not crocodile attacks alone (Subalusky et al., 2017, pp. 7647–7649). Their PNAS study of Mara River drownings found that the carcasses then feed fish, birds, microbes and other consumers and store nutrients in slowly decomposing bones.

This matters ethically and scientifically. A crossing is not a guaranteed performance, and vehicles pressing toward an unsettled herd may affect the situation visitors came to witness. Sometimes the most responsible decision is to wait at a distance or leave.

Do Cheetahs, Leopards and Wild Dogs Hunt Wildebeest?
Yes, but not on equal terms and not with equal importance to the migration. Cheetahs may take calves or small juveniles on open ground. Leopards are opportunistic ambush predators and may take young wildebeest where cover helps. African wild dogs can pursue young or manageable individuals, while jackals and other smaller carnivores are most relevant to newborns or carcass remains.
These are possibilities, not a fixed ranking. Prey choice changes with predator body size, group size, habitat and available alternatives. TANAPA’s Serengeti visitor guide lists lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas among the park’s prominent carnivores, but seeing any predator is different from witnessing a hunt. Avoid operators that advertise a kill as if it can be staged on demand.
Where to Track the Herd by Season
Southern plains: roughly December to March

Look toward southern Serengeti and the adjoining Ngorongoro short-grass plains, including the wider Ndutu area. Calving is the anchor. TANAPA’s revised migration guidance says more than 250,000 calves are born annually and about four-fifths arrive within a few weeks around mid-February. Treat those as official rounded estimates, not a daily guarantee.
This is the strongest season for newborn behaviour and sustained predator–prey observation. It is also a sensitive period. A good guide gives mothers and calves room and does not force a closer photograph.
Central and western sectors: roughly April to July

As forage changes, groups can spread through central Serengeti and, in some years, the Western Corridor. This is a transition, not a single line of animals. Seronera has valuable resident wildlife, while the west can bring riverine and woodland habitat into the story. Ask for current field reports before choosing a camp; a fashionable month is less useful than the correct zone.
Northern Serengeti: roughly July to October

Northern country around Kogatende and Lamai is the main Tanzanian base for dry-season Mara River watching. Herds may cross repeatedly, cross elsewhere, approach and retreat, or remain away from a chosen point. Build a northern stay around the whole ecosystem plains, woodlands, resident cats and river life not one predicted crossing.

How to Track Responsibly
TANAPA’s Mara River migration-crossing guideline, revised in June 2024, requires vehicles at designated crossing points to remain stationary when animals congregate, respect vehicle limits and viewing distances, stay on one side as directed, and leave enough space for animals to pass without blocking (TANAPA, 2024, pp. 1–2).

Before booking, ask the operator to explain those rules and reconfirm current park instructions, camp location and transfer arrangements. Prefer guides who interpret tracks, posture, wind, habitat and alarm behaviour rather than racing between radio calls. Three nights in the correct migration zone usually create more flexibility than a one-night dash, but no duration guarantees a crossing or hunt.
Keep voices low, never ask a driver to crowd an animal, and accept that the best encounter may be quiet: a hyena returning from a commute, a lion selecting cover, or a herd changing direction after rain.

When is the best time to see wildebeest predators in Tanzania?
For concentrated predator–prey activity, the southern calving period around late January to March is compelling. Northern Serengeti from roughly July to October offers river-country drama. Lions and hyenas are present year-round, so the best choice depends on whether you value calves, migration movement or a possible crossing.
Are crocodiles the wildebeest’s biggest hunters?
No. Crocodiles can kill wildebeest at river crossings, but lions and spotted hyenas are the principal terrestrial predators. Research also shows that many river deaths occur through mass drowning. The most visible danger is not necessarily the greatest source of predation across the annual cycle.
Can a safari company guarantee a Mara River crossing?
No credible company can guarantee the place or time. Herd position, rainfall, forage, river conditions and disturbance all matter. Choose a northern itinerary that remains rewarding without a crossing and ask how guides use recent sightings to adapt each day.
Is the calving season safe for young children to watch?
It can be, but adults should prepare children for births, predation and carcasses. Ask for a private vehicle if you may need to leave quickly, explain the natural context without sensationalism, and tell the guide your family’s comfort limits before the drive.
How many days should I spend tracking the migration?
Allow at least three nights in the zone most likely to hold the herds, with more time if a particular behaviour matters greatly. Transfer days reduce observation time. A well-planned four- or five-night stay with resident-wildlife alternatives is more resilient to rain-driven changes than a rushed checklist.
