Tanzania’s entry process is manageable once you separate three questions: what your passport nationality requires, what activity you will undertake and whether Zanzibar is on the route. The answer can be visa-free entry, an eVisa, a visa on arrival or advance referral approval not one universal rule for every visitor.
Start with the official Tanzania eVisa portal, not a commercial visa agency or an old country list. The portal covers travel to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar and provides application-status tracking.
What do travellers need to enter Tanzania? Most visitors need a passport valid for at least six months with one unused visa page, the correct visa or exemption, onward-travel evidence and sufficient funds. Some itineraries also require a yellow-fever certificate, while non-resident visitors to Zanzibar need separate ZIC inbound insurance.
Tanzania Entry Planning: Mainland and Zanzibar
Tanzania’s immigration rules cover the United Republic, including the mainland and Zanzibar. The same Tanzanian eVisa can therefore cover an itinerary combining a Serengeti safari with Zanzibar; travellers do not obtain a second Zanzibar visa. However, Zanzibar has an additional insurance requirement for visitors who are not residents.
Entry may be through an international airport, seaport or land border, but Tanzania Immigration says travellers must use a designated formal entry point. Its official entry requirements say foreign visitors may be asked for a visa, return or onward-travel evidence and proof that they can support themselves during the trip.
The rules suit holidays, safaris, beach stays, family visits and short tourism trips, but they do not automatically cover employment, volunteering, study or professional assignments. Match the document to the purpose, not merely to the length of stay. Once the paperwork is clear, XTRAfrica’s guide to Tanzania’s main destinations can help identify the right arrival gateway.
Check Your Passport Before Applying
The Tanzania eVisa terms require a passport with at least six months’ validity and at least one unused visa page when the application is submitted. Your airline or home-country advisory may apply the six-month rule from the arrival date, so the safest approach is to ensure the passport remains valid for more than six months beyond entry.
