Ghana is preparing evacuation support for around 300 citizens in South Africa following renewed xenophobic unrest and anti-migrant violence reported in several areas, according to a report by Reuters.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the affected citizens had registered with Ghana’s High Commission for assistance as concerns grow over attacks targeting migrants from other African countries. South African authorities have condemned the violence while also acknowledging ongoing tensions linked to illegal immigration debates.
The developments come as several African governments issue safety advisories to nationals living in South Africa. Nigeria has also announced plans for voluntary return flights after more than 130 citizens reportedly requested repatriation support, according to an earlier XTRAfrica report.
Recent demonstrations in cities including Johannesburg and Pretoria have included calls for stricter immigration enforcement and increased pressure on undocumented migrants. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has publicly condemned violence against foreigners while urging respect for local laws and social stability.
The unrest has renewed wider regional discussions around migration pressures, unemployment and cross-border mobility in Africa’s largest industrial economy.
