Asake a Lagos-born Nigerian Afrobeats and street-pop artist
Asake is a Nigerian singer, rapper and songwriter who turned Yoruba-led street pop into one of Afrobeats’ most recognisable global sounds. Born Ololade Ahmed in Lagos, he moved from dance and university performance into music, then broke through nationally after Olamide joined “Omo Ope” and signed him to YBNL in 2022.
His official X account now documents a career that includes four studio albums, two Grammy nominations, a MOBO Award and major arena performances. By August 2026, Asake was no longer defined by one explosive year: M$NEY, a London concert film and new unreleased material had extended his story into an independent, increasingly orchestral phase.
Who is Asake? Asake is a Lagos-born Nigerian Afrobeats and street-pop artist known for blending Yoruba lyrics, fújì phrasing, amapiano log drums and massed vocals. His 2022 breakthrough led to four albums, two Grammy nominations and a run of Nigerian and international streaming records.
“Omo Ope,” “Sungba” and the 2022 Breakthrough
Asake’s public rise compressed years of effort into a remarkable 2022 sequence. “Omo Ope,” featuring Olamide, introduced his clipped melodic delivery to a much wider Nigerian audience. The four-track Ololade Asake EP followed, with “Sungba” becoming another defining record and a Burna Boy remix widening its continental reach.
The signing was not an overnight discovery. In a Cool FM interview about joining YBNL, Asake described years spent under an earlier label and persistent attempts to reach Olamide. That context matters: the breakthrough supplied infrastructure and visibility, but the performer, songs and hunger already existed.
September brought Mr Money with the Vibe. Its tightly connected production, choral hooks and streetwise confidence gave the singles the force of a complete album. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 66, then the highest position for a Nigerian debut album. XTRAfrica’s Asake songs catalogue brings together the later releases that grew from that foundation.
Formative Life: Lagos Roots, Dance Training and the Meaning of Asake
Asake was born Ololade Ahmed in Lagos on 13 January 1995. His current Apple Music biography confirms the date and birthplace, making him 31 years old as of 9 August 2026. The name “Asake” comes from his mother; he chose a family name rather than inventing a detached pop persona.
Performance came before recording success. In a detailed GQ profile, he explained that he studied art, theatre and film directing at university, taught dance and drew inspiration from his parents and the culture around him. Dance sharpened the physicality later seen in his live shows, while theatre helped him think beyond the microphone.
