  • South Africa's Democratic Alliance (DA) is committed to finalizing cabinet negotiations with President Cyril Ramaphosa's African National Congress (ANC). Despite reports of potential collapse due to disagreements over the trade and industry portfolio, both parties are determined to reach an agreement. A senior ANC official stated that coalition discussions are "almost done," while DA leader John Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of a stable government where the DA can play a meaningful role. This coalition allowed Ramaphosa to secure a second term after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula reassured the public that negotiations are nearing completion. Financial markets responded positively, with the rand strengthening on optimism. The dispute arose from Ramaphosa retracting an offer to the DA for the trade and industry ministry, which is key to boosting Black South Africans' economic participation. Despite the challenges, the DA is expected to stay in the unity government to demonstrate its commitment to making an impact. The finalization of these negotiations will indicate the future dynamics of South Africa's government. • Zambia's former First Lady, Esther Lungu, and her daughter, Chiyeso Katete, have been arrested on charges related to the possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime. The arrests took place on Thursday in Lusaka, along with a relative, Charles Phiri, according to authorities. The state anti-drug agency reported that Ms. Lungu could not provide a reasonable explanation for acquiring a $1.5 million estate in the capital. Former President Edgar Lungu announced that the family intends to challenge the charges in court, claiming that the government is politically victimizing them to prevent his return to politics ahead of the 2026 elections. He also previously alleged that he was placed under house arrest due to his political activities, a claim the government denies. Ms. Lungu, 66, was arrested for allegedly fraudulently acquiring a luxurious property in Lusaka's State Lodge area, consisting of 15 white double-storey flats. The property, jointly owned with others, was reportedly acquired between 2015 and 2023. Her daughter faces additional charges for acquiring another estate in Lusaka and possessing a high-cost house, four chicken runs, and related works. After questioning, the accused were released on bond. Another daughter, Tasila Lungu, is also facing related charges and has been summoned to appear at the Drug Enforcement Commission on Monday. Former President Lungu, who retired from politics after losing the presidency in 2021, announced a political comeback last October, resulting in the withdrawal of his retirement benefits. His tenure left Zambia with significant debt and a struggling economy. President Hakainde Hichilema's administration has since intensified an anti-corruption campaign, targeting former officials and Mr. Lungu’s family members to recover allegedly looted resources. • Qing Madi Accuses Ex-Label Boss of Forgery and Theft

Qing Madi accuses Joy Tongo of forging her signature, stealing from her and sabotaging her new album Barely Legal. Qing Madi ’s fight with her former record label has moved from the courtroom to the timeline. According to the original report, the Nigerian Afrobeats singer has accused Joy Tongo , CEO of JTon Music, of forging her signature, stealing from her and trying to damage her career. The drama intensified after several songs from Qing Madi ’s new album, Barely Legal, were reportedly removed from streaming platforms over an alleged contract dispute. During a recent TikTok livestream, the American Love singer claimed her former label had been working behind the scenes to frustrate her music rollout. Qing Madi alleged that Tongo previously sued her for $2 million and lost. She also claimed her song Pepper Me was taken down before her team proved the removal was illegal. The singer said the latest takedowns were another attempt to interfere with her project, adding that she was tired of the back-and-forth with her former label. She also called on fans to speak up, framing the dispute as more than just industry politics. For Qing Madi, it is about protecting her work, her name and her freedom as an artist. Joy Tongo has denied the allegations. In a post shared on Instagram, she described Qing Madi’s claims as false and rejected the accusations of forgery and theft. Tongo also disputed the singer’s claim that the case had already been won, saying the matter was still before the court and had not gone to trial. She added that an injunction connected to the case allows the label to issue legal takedowns against Qing Madi’s songs or projects. • The Congo River: Africa’s Deepest and Most Powerful River

Discover the Congo River, Africa’s deepest and most powerful river. Explore its course, biodiversity, hydropower, and vital role in Africa’s future. Often described as Africa’s sleeping giant, the Congo River is more than a waterway; it’s a force of nature, a cultural artery, and an economic backbone for millions. Flowing over 4,700 kilometers from the highlands of northeastern Zambia to the Atlantic Ocean, it’s the second-longest river in Africa and the deepest in the world, plunging to over 220 meters near Pool Malebo. The Congo’s vast basin spans 10 African countries, including DRC, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Angola, Zambia, and Tanzania. Its role in transport, biodiversity, hydropower, agriculture, and climate regulation makes it one of the most important and powerful rivers on Earth. Upper Congo: A Dynamic Beginning The river begins as the Chambeshi River in Zambia, transitioning into the Lualaba River, the Congo’s main headstream. It gathers strength from tributaries like the Luapula and Luvua, flowing past Lake Bangweulu and Lake Mweru. This stretch is marked by powerful rapids, shaping the terrain and ecosystems while remaining largely untapped for navigation or energy. It soon becomes the Lualaba River, the principal headstream of the Congo, and starts to gather the waters from various tributaries. Among the first major tributaries is the Luapula River, flowing from Lake Bangweulu, followed by the Luvua River, which drains from Lake Mweru. The river's upper course is characterized by a series of rapids that create a dynamic flow, shaping the terrain and ecosystems around it. Middle Congo: A Crucial Transport Corridor As it widens, the Congo is joined by key tributaries like the Kasai, Sankuru, and Lomami Rivers. This region forms the economic core, where the river becomes a major transportation route in a land where roads are often impassable. More than 1.5 million tonnes are officially transported annually, mostly via cargo barges, though informal trade is even higher. However, poor infrastructure, unsafe vessels, and illegal taxation threaten this essential lifeline. However, poor infrastructure, unsafe vessels, and illegal taxation threaten this essential lifeline. The Kasai River, one of the Congo River's largest tributaries This section marks the middle course of the Congo, where the river's flow becomes steadier, serving as a crucial waterway for transportation and commerce in the heart of the continent. The river's breadth and depth here support a rich variety of aquatic life and provide essential resources for the surrounding communities. Lower Congo: Power and Peril The Congo gains dramatic force in its final stretch, joined by the Ubangi and Sangha Rivers. Near Kinshasa and Matadi, it plunges through Livingstone Falls, a 350 km series of rapids and gorges with a drop of 270 meters. These rapids are stunning but dangerous, making this section non-navigable. It's also where the Congo’s hydropower dreams begin, with the Inga Falls hosting existing and planned mega-dam projects, including Grand Inga. Second-longest tributary is the Ubangi River The Sangha River also merges here, enriching the Congo's waters further. The river's lower course is infamous for its treacherous waters, including the formidable Livingstone Falls, a series of massive rapids and deep gorges that present significant challenges to navigation. The River's Power and Peril As it nears the Atlantic Ocean, the Congo River's depth and speed increase dramatically, making it an imposing force of nature. The final stretch of 186 miles is particularly perilous with its rapid descents through narrow gorges. Congo River now perilous with its rapid descents Dr. Melanie Stiassny, an ichthyologist, describes this transformation vividly, highlighting the river's transition from a gentle giant to a roaring powerhouse as it plunges down the gorges. A Sanctuary of Biodiversity The Congo River feeds the second-largest rainforest in the world, home to over 10,000 plant species and 2,500 animal species. Around 230 fish species are found in its deepest zones, especially around Pool Malebo, adapted to life without sunlight. ADVERTISEMENT Its basin stores up to 39 billion tonnes of CO₂, making it a global climate regulator. But threats like logging, mining, and climate change are shrinking this ecological goldmine by over 2,000 square kilometers per year. Acquatic life at Pool Malebo and Piok with Over 230 species of fish In the depths near Pool Malebo and Pioka, the river reaches depths of up to 220 meters where light cannot penetrate, creating a unique habitat for specialized aquatic species. Over 230 species of fish have been identified in these dark waters, many adapted to life without sunlight. These ecosystems support an astonishing array of life The Congo River, with its vast array of landscapes and ecosystems, supports an astonishing array of life along its banks and in its waters. Various species of reptiles, birds, and insects depend on this mighty river, showcasing its role as a critical ecological corridor. Water & Agriculture: Untapped Potential Despite being Africa’s largest freshwater source, less than 10% of DRC households have access to piped water. The river discharges 1.3 trillion m³ annually, yet irrigation and agriculture remain severely underdeveloped. The potential to irrigate 60,000+ square kilometers exists, enough to significantly improve food security across the region, but remains largely unrealized due to poor infrastructure and funding. Hydropower: Sleeping Energy Giant The Congo holds 13% of the world’s hydroelectric potential, about 100,000 MW. Yet only 3% is currently used, mainly via Inga 1 (351 MW) and Inga 2 (1,424 MW). The ambitious Inga 3 and Grand Inga projects aim to produce up to 40,000 MW, supplying DRC, South Africa, and other nations. But environmental, social, and financial concerns persist. Communities near the dam may receive less than 100 MW, while industries like mining take the lion’s share. River of Integration and Cooperation The Congo Basin involves 10 countries, but conflicts are rare thanks to shared interests. Initiatives like CICOS (Congo-Oubangui-Sangha Commission) promote navigation, water management, and regional unity. Still, mega-projects like Grand Inga spark concerns over ecological damage, mining expansion, and water governance. Final Reflection The Congo River isn’t just a marvel of nature; it’s the pulse of Central Africa, offering solutions to energy, transport, climate, and food challenges. But unlocking its potential requires vision, balance, and respect for its people and ecosystems. As Africa rises, the Congo must not be forgotten. A Starsky Aviation Fokker 50 overran the runway in Mogadishu and stopped in shallow water. All 55 aboard survived; an inquiry is under way A Somali passenger plane overran the runway at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport on Tuesday and came to rest in shallow water along the shoreline, with all 55 people on board reported safe. The aircraft, operated by Starsky Aviation, had returned for an emergency landing after the crew reported a technical problem shortly after takeoff as initially cited by BBC News. According to Somalia ’s Civil Aviation Authority, the flight touched down back in Mogadishu but failed to stop on the runway, overshooting the tarmac before ending up in the water near the Indian Ocean beach. Officials said the cause of the technical issue was not immediately clear, and an investigation has been launched. Video shared on social media showed passengers exiting the aircraft and moving away from the wreckage on the shore. No serious injuries were reported, and Starsky Aviation said all 50 passengers and five crew members were evacuated safely. The African Union mission in Somalia said its personnel, alongside partners, were deployed to support the response at the scene, and Somalia’s transport minister was also reported to have visited the site. Starsky Aviation praised the pilot’s handling of the emergency, saying his calm decision-making was critical to ensuring everyone on board got out safely. Authorities and the airline said inquiries are continuing to establish what led to the runway overrun and the emergency landing outcome. • The draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers has set the stage for some exciting matchups. Reigning champions Ivory Coast, confident after their recent triumph, aim to reach the finals in Morocco. Nigeria, however, faces a challenging group in the qualifying draw held in Johannesburg. The Super Eagles are paired with Beni n, Rwanda, and Libya. Benin, coached by former Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr, recently defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria, now seeking a new manager after Finidi George's resignation, is yet to officially confirm his departure as he joined Rivers United. Ivory Coast, who secured their third continental title in February by defeating Nigeria in the delayed 2023 Afcon final, will compete against 2012 champions Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Chad. Elephants coach Emerse Fae, who helped conduct the draw, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. "We played against Zambia for the last Afcon qualifying and lost 3-0 away," Fae told BBC Sport Africa. "It will be a very difficult game, but knowing them will help us avoid the same mistakes." Speaking to Caf TV, Fae added, "The most important thing for me is we don't have long trips. It's going to be good." The 48 competing teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group advancing to the finals in Morocco. Hosts Morocco are assured of a place, meaning only one other team from their group, which includes Gabon, Central African Republic, and Lesotho, will qualify. The qualifiers are scheduled across six match days in September, October, and November this year. "I prefer to play all the games in a short time," Fae noted. "Playing each month is beneficial for us and allows ample time to prepare for the competition if we qualify." The 2025 Afcon finals will commence on December 21, 2025, and conclude on January 18, 2026. This scheduling marks the first time the tournament will take place over the Christmas and New Year period, overlapping with the Premier League's festive programme and UEFA Champions League match rounds. • Mbalula Warns Against the US Isolation of South Africa from Africa

Fikile Mbalula warns against South Africa being isolated from Africa, calls for unity, trade, and ANC renewal. African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has warned against allowing the United States, under President Donald Trump, to isolate South Africa from the rest of the African continent, calling instead for collective resistance and stronger intra-African cooperation, according to News24. Addressing delegates on the final day of the 27th ANC Youth League (ANCYL) national congress at the University of Limpopo , Mbalula urged African countries to stand with South Africa rather than leaving it to confront geopolitical pressure alone. “South Africa must not fight alone. It must fight with the rest of the African continent. It must never accept to be isolated from the rest of the African continent,” Mbalula said. He added: “We must not allow Donald Trump to isolate us from the African continent. We must fight as the African continent for our own African Renaissance.” Mbalula emphasised that the African Renaissance remains a central political task, particularly for young leaders, and said it is inseparable from the expansion of intra-African trade. He called on African states to strengthen economic ties among themselves and reduce dependence on external powers. “African countries must trade among themselves. Africa must stop being beggars of others,” he said. “If we are so powerful, we will not be a walkover [for] the United States.” According to News24 , Mbalula also praised the ANCYL for successfully organising a peaceful and self-managed congress without direct assistance from the ANC, despite scepticism about its ability to do so. He said the congress demonstrated the league’s organisational maturity. He further commended the uncontested election of the youth league’s leadership, suggesting it offered lessons for the broader ANC as it works to overcome internal divisions. “Comrades, we wish you well, and we're very happy about this congress. It was a peaceful congress, not characterised by pettiness or factionalism, as we walk the path of renewal,” Mbalula said. Your integrity is non-negotiable,” he said. “The youth league must never be an organisation of another leader or another member. It must be an organ of the African National Congress.” He encouraged the youth league to speak out forcefully within the party, describing its role as one that challenges complacency and accelerates transformation. “And that's what we expect from the youth. If we, in the ANC, move more slowly, you must make us move fast. That is your role as the youth,” he said, while warning against confusing militancy with recklessness. “You must never fear speaking out, but always do so from a correct disposition.
