Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, known professionally as Sarkodie, has paid tribute to renowned gospel musician Yaw Sarpong following his death.
Yaw Sarpong, founder of the Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo gospel group, died on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Emena Hospital in Accra. His passing was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis. No official cause of death has been disclosed as of the time of reporting.
In a public tribute, Sarkodie said the late gospel icon’s music and ministry played a significant role in strengthening his Christian faith. The award-winning rapper also extended condolences to Sarpong’s family, associates, and the wider Ghanaian community.
Sarkodie joins several public figures who have expressed grief over the loss of the respected gospel pioneer, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s gospel music history.
Yaw Sarpong’s death comes shortly after the passing of Maame Tiwa, a long-serving member of the Asomafo group, deepening the sense of loss within the gospel music fraternity.
Tributes continue to highlight Sarpong’s lasting impact on worship, faith, and gospel ministry in Ghana, with many describing his contributions as foundational to the genre’s development.
