The vampire horror film Sinners has set a new Academy Awards record after receiving 16 Oscar nominations, the highest number ever secured by a single film.
The film surpasses the previous record of 14 nominations, achieved by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. It also leads this year’s nominations ahead of One Battle After Another, which earned 13 nods.
Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, who is nominated for Best Actor for his dual role as twin brothers returning to Mississippi in the 1930s to open a juke joint targeted by vampires. British actors Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo also received acting nominations.
Director Ryan Coogler earned nominations for directing, writing, and producing the film, which is also shortlisted for Best Picture. The success of Sinners challenges the long-standing perception that horror films struggle to gain recognition at major award ceremonies.
The Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Hollywood on March 15, where winners across all categories will be announced.
