According to Forbes Africa, South African superstar Tyla delivered another major moment for African music at the 2026 American Music Awards, taking home two trophies and further cementing her place among the continent’s biggest global exports.

The singer won Best Afrobeats Artist and Social Song of the Year for her smash hit Chanel, a track that has already surpassed 352 million streams on Spotify. The victories add to a growing list of international achievements for the Grammy-winning artist.

One of the night's biggest talking points was Tyla successfully defending her Best Afrobeats Artist title for a second straight year. She edged out some of the genre’s most influential names, including Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, and MOLIY, underlining her growing influence on the global music scene.

Although Tyla did not attend the ceremony, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, her presence was felt through the awards she secured. Her absence did little to overshadow the impact of her achievements.

Speaking to Forbes Africa on the red carpet, musician Tiffany Stringer praised Tyla’s sound and artistic identity, highlighting the way she blends Afrobeats and Amapiano influences into something distinctive. Canadian singer Johnny Orlando also commended her ability to create a style that resonates with audiences across different parts of the world.

Beyond Tyla’s personal success, the AMA nominations reflected a wider shift in the global music industry. African genres such as Afrobeats, Amapiano, and other cross-genre sounds continue to expand their reach, becoming regular features on international charts, streaming platforms, and major award shows.

The Best Afrobeats category itself showcased the continent’s diversity, with artists from South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana represented among the nominees. It was another reminder that African music is no longer viewed as a niche market but as a driving force in global popular culture.

For South Africa, Tyla’s latest triumph adds to an already remarkable international run. Alongside her Grammy success, she is also set to perform during the upcoming FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies in Mexico and Los Angeles, further expanding her global profile.

The message from this year’s AMAs was clear: African artists no longer need to be physically present to dominate the conversation. Through streaming, global fan communities, and chart success, Africa’s music influence continues to grow—and Tyla is leading that charge.
