US President Donald Trump on Sunday indicated he may intervene in Netflix’s proposed Sh10 trillion acquisition of Hollywood studio Warner Bros., citing potential competition concerns.
Speaking on arrival at the Kennedy Centre Honours ceremony, Trump said Netflix already holds “a very large market share,” adding that the planned takeover “could be a problem” for regulators reviewing the nearly $83 billion offer.
“I’ll be involved in that decision,” Trump stated, referencing the antitrust review currently underway. The acquisition has drawn scrutiny from industry figures and analysts who warn it could significantly reshape the entertainment sector.
Trump also praised Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who recently met with him at the White House, calling him “one of the greatest” executives in the film industry.
Under the proposed structure, Netflix would absorb HBO Max and Warner Bros. studios, gaining control of a catalogue that includes classics such as Casablanca and Citizen Kane as well as modern hits like Barbie. The library also features major franchises including Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and DC titles like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
The deal would exclude cable channels such as CNN and Discovery, which would be separated from Warner Bros. before any sale is completed.
Warner Bros. Discovery placed itself on the market in October after receiving multiple unsolicited bids, surpassing interest from Comcast and Paramount’s Skydance, the latter led by David Ellison, a known Trump supporter.
