Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Alausa has said she would still choose a career in entertainment over more conventional professions such as law or medicine, describing acting as a lifelong calling rather than a career decision.
Alausa made the remarks in an interview with Sunday Sun, where she reflected on her journey in the Nigerian film industry, her upbringing, and the evolution of Nollywood.
The actress, who began acting as a child in the 1980s, said her father initially opposed her decision to pursue entertainment, preferring she become a lawyer or doctor. According to her, her mother introduced her to acting but later withdrew support when roles became scarce, urging her to seek more stable employment. She said it took years of persistence and consistency before her family fully accepted her career path.
Alausa noted that her most memorable projects include Edge of Paradise, an M-Net production, and Omotara Johnson, both of which she said continue to resonate with audiences.
Speaking on storytelling in Nollywood, the actress said the industry has made progress in projecting indigenous narratives, particularly epic films rooted in Nigerian history and culture. She cited productions such as Anikulapo, King of Thieves and Lisabi as examples of films that showcase African identity to global audiences.
She also advised aspiring actors against seeking overnight fame, stressing that growth, formal training and patience remain essential for long-term success in the industry.
The actress added that while she is often cast in calm or motherly roles, she consciously works to bring depth and variation to each performance.
