Nigerian music producer Samklef has accused Afrobeats star Davido of contributing to what he describes as growing toxicity within the country’s music industry.

The producer made the remarks while reacting to a social media post by fellow producer-turned-singer Pheelz, who had criticised the culture of constant comparisons among artists. Pheelz wrote that music was meant to be enjoyed rather than measured against others, warning that comparison-driven rivalry was harming creativity and cultural growth in the industry.

Responding to the comment, Samklef said such comparisons were largely absent in earlier years of the Nigerian music scene. He argued that tensions and rivalry intensified following Davido’s rise to prominence.

According to Samklef, the industry experienced a more collaborative atmosphere during the early careers of artists such as Wizkid and Olamide, when competition was minimal and creative output was driven by mutual support rather than rivalry.

He further alleged that Davido’s entry into the mainstream marked a turning point, claiming that the industry became characterised by unhealthy competition, aggressive fan behaviour and questionable promotional practices. Samklef described what he termed a “cult-like mindset” that he believes contributed to divisions among artists and supporters.

The comments have added to ongoing debates within Nigeria’s entertainment industry about competition, fan culture and the impact of social media on artist relationships. Davido has not publicly responded to the claims.
