Ghanaian singer Queen eShun has warned upcoming musicians to be cautious about signing record deals, describing some contracts as “death traps” that can limit an artiste’s freedom and career growth.

The singer, born Ethel Esi Eshun, shared the advice during an interview on February 28, where she reflected on her experiences in the music industry and the challenges artistes may face when working with record labels.

Queen eShun explained that while managers and record labels can offer support, young artistes should take time to fully understand any agreement before committing to it. According to her, poorly understood contracts can restrict musicians from releasing music and controlling their artistic direction.

Speaking about her own journey, the singer revealed that she once stepped away from music to focus on her education. After returning, she chose to operate independently under the name “Queenie Shawn Music,” managing her own affairs rather than relying heavily on external management structures

She noted that some managers may prioritise their own interests, which can sometimes conflict with an artiste’s goals or creative vision. Such conflicts, she said, may affect decisions about music style, genre, or the direction of an artiste’s career.

Queen eShun also encouraged emerging musicians to seek professional legal advice before signing contracts. She emphasised that a lawyer can help identify hidden clauses that might otherwise trap artistes in long-term agreements.

In her view, building a personal team while maintaining control of one’s brand can offer greater peace of mind and flexibility. She added that having collaborators who understand an artiste’s style, goals and identity is crucial for long-term success.

The singer’s comments serve as a reminder to aspiring musicians to carefully evaluate management and recording agreements, protect their creative independence, and remain actively involved in shaping their careers.
