Nkem Owoh did not chase Nollywood fame. Nollywood found him.
According to Selah Meditate podcast, the veteran actor, widely loved as Osuofia, said his journey into acting began unexpectedly after colleagues noticed his natural gift for comedy while he was working behind the scenes.
Owoh explained that his first plan was not to become a screen star. He wanted to remain a scriptwriter, contributing to productions from the background.
But people around him kept pushing him toward the camera. They saw how easily he made cast and crew members laugh and believed audiences would respond to the same energy.
That push eventually led him to Ana,mbra Television, where he was given a seven-minute stand-up comedy slot in the 1980s. At first, he was hesitant. But once he stepped in front of the camera, viewers connected with him.
That response changed everything.
What started as pressure from colleagues slowly became one of the most important comic careers in Nollywood history. Owoh went on to become one of Nigeria’s most recognisable actors, building a legacy through sharp humour, expressive delivery, and characters that still live in African pop culture.
But the actor also spoke about the side of fame many fans rarely see.
Owoh said celebrity life came with restrictions. The popularity that made him a household name also reduced his privacy and limited the simple freedoms he once enjoyed.
His reflection adds a human layer to a career many people only see through laughter. Behind the iconic roles and viral comic moments is an artist who entered Nollywood almost by accident, then stayed because the audience embraced him.
For younger performers, Nkem Owoh’s story is a reminder that talent can be discovered in unexpected places — but fame, even when earned, always comes with a cost.
