American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained her decision to publicly address concerns about the safety and treatment of Christians in Nigeria, citing personal ties to the country and reports of violence targeting worshippers.
Minaj spoke on the issue during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest, where she responded to a question from the audience about Nigeria. She said the country holds personal significance for her, noting that her pastor is Nigerian and that she has a large fan base in the country, often referred to as “Nigerian Barbs.”
According to the artist, reports of kidnappings and killings of Christians during church activities were deeply troubling and compelled her to speak publicly. She said such incidents should prompt global concern and outrage, adding that silence in the face of persecution only emboldens further abuse.
Minaj stressed that she is no longer willing to remain quiet on matters of religious freedom, stating that she intends to speak out for Christians and others facing persecution around the world.
She also addressed the broader issue of religious liberty, noting that many people globally do not enjoy the freedom to worship openly. She warned that such freedoms are often taken for granted in countries where they are protected, urging people to remember and pray for those forced to worship in hiding.
Her comments at AmericaFest followed a recent reaction to a social media post by former US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity is under serious threat in Nigeria. At the time, Minaj expressed gratitude for the freedom to worship and condemned religious persecution, saying no group should be targeted for practising their faith.
During her appearance, Minaj also commented on religious freedom in the United States, arguing that Christians face challenges there as well and emphasising the role of leadership in protecting fundamental rights.
