Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has responded to criticism over her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, saying the story should be viewed as mythology rather than historical fact.
Nyong’o addressed the backlash during an interview with Elle, after some critics questioned the decision to cast a Black actress in the role of the iconic Greek character from Homer’s ancient epic poem. The actress said she supports Nolan’s creative vision and believes the film’s diverse cast reflects the modern world.
“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling,” Nyong’o said, adding that she does not spend time trying to defend herself against criticism.
The controversy intensified after billionaire Elon Musk criticised the casting on X, formerly Twitter, accusing Nolan of disrespecting Greek culture. Musk compared the decision to casting a White actor as Shaka Zulu, the historic Zulu leader.
Nyong’o described The Odyssey as a large-scale project that “spans worlds,” saying the film’s cast represents the broad and epic nature of the story. Nolan, however, has not publicly commented on the criticism.
The upcoming film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The Odyssey is scheduled for release in cinemas in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17.
