Veteran wrestler and WWE superstar John Cena has officially retired from professional wrestling following a defeat to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event held at Capital One Arena.
The bout marked the final match of Cena’s career. The 17-time world champion engaged in a competitive contest, with both wrestlers trading momentum for much of the match. Cena delivered three Attitude Adjustments, including a top-rope version, and sent Gunther through the announce table, but was unable to secure a pinfall.
Gunther ultimately prevailed, forcing Cena to submit to a sleeper hold after several escape attempts.
The event was presented as a major WWE spectacle, featuring appearances from wrestling legends and celebrities. Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Trish Stratus, Eve Torres and others were shown at ringside, while video tributes aired from figures including The Undertaker, The Rock, Tom Brady and Jalen Brunson.
Gunther entered the arena first, followed by a sustained ovation for Cena. Notably, long-standing chants directed at Cena were replaced by supportive cheers. Cena briefly filmed himself with a camera before entering the ring and acknowledging the legends seated nearby.
After the match, Cena addressed the crowd, saying, “That’s all I’ve got.” Members of the WWE locker room then surrounded the ring as CM Punk and Cody Rhodes placed their championship belts on Cena’s shoulders.
As the crowd chanted “Thank you, Cena,” he shared an embrace with Triple H before a final tribute video played. Cena then walked up the entrance ramp, saluted the audience, and exited the arena, bringing his wrestling career to a close.
