Basic requirements (official application process)
On the official SAPS application-process page for appointment under the SAPS Act, applicants must (among other points):
Complete the official application form and affirm that the information is true and correct
Have permanent residency in South Africa and provide documentary proof
Be at least 18 years old (the older process page still states younger than 30; recent SAPS trainee media statements used ages 18 to 35 — always follow the live advert)
Pass physical and medical examination as determined by SAPS
Pass psychological assessment as determined by the National Commissioner
Hold a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification
Be fluent in English and at least one other official language
Be prepared to take the oath of office and undergo SAPS training
Have no visible tattoos that are contrary to SAPS objectives
Have no previous criminal convictions
Allow fingerprints and background checks

How to register and apply on e-Recruitment
SAPS FAQ guidance for the e-Recruitment portal is straightforward:
Go to erecruitment.saps.gov.za (or open e-Recruitment from saps.gov.za/careers).
Click Sign In and follow the prompts to create a profile.
Provide your personal details, accept the terms and conditions, and complete your profile.
When a vacancy is open, apply for that post through the portal and keep your reference details from confirmation emails.

What the 2025/2026 trainee drive looked like
On 30 June 2025, SAPS published a media statement launching e-Recruitment for 5 500 entry-level police trainee posts for the 2025/2026 financial year. Online applications opened that day and closed on 18 July 2025. The drive targeted applicants aged 18 to 35 without criminal records or pending criminal cases.
SAPS also said it would consider applicants with specific skills or qualifications (for example Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, and Information Technology) for specialised environments such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services, and Crime Intelligence.
According to that statement, shortlisted applicants face psychometric, integrity, physical fitness, fingerprint or vetting, and medical assessments. Successful recruits undergo nine-month training at SAPS academies and receive a monthly stipend of R4 500 during that training period.
That intake window has closed. For the next trainee or vacancy advert, watch the official Careers page and official SAPS social channels. Do not rely on WhatsApp forwards or unpaid Facebook ads.
