Who Must Apply?
The online system is intended for parents and guardians seeking a place for a child entering Grade 1 or Grade 8 at a Gauteng public school in 2027.
Parents whose children are currently in Grade R must still submit a Grade 1 application. Attendance at Grade R does not automatically guarantee admission to Grade 1 at the same school.
Applications for grades other than Grade 1 and Grade 8 are generally handled directly by individual schools rather than through this admissions cycle.
Documents Parents Should Prepare
The documents required can depend on the learner’s citizenship, grade and the application information entered on the portal.
Parents should prepare clear digital copies of the relevant documents before starting. These may include:
Parent or legal guardian’s South African identity document or passport
Learner’s birth certificate or identification document

How to Apply in Five Steps
Step 1: Register the Parent or Guardian
Open the official admissions portal and create a parent or guardian profile.
Enter the requested identity, contact and login information accurately. Use a cellphone number that will remain active because the department sends application and placement updates by SMS.
Save the username and password securely.
Step 2: Add the Parent’s Address
Enter the correct residential address.
Address information is important because school feeder zones are linked to geographical areas. Incorrect or unverifiable address information can affect how an application is processed.
Parents may also be able to provide work-address information where relevant, but they should follow the choices displayed by the system.
Step 3: Register the Learner
Enter the learner’s personal information, current school details and the grade for which the learner is applying.
Check identity numbers, names, dates of birth and current-grade information before continuing. Errors can delay verification or require assistance from the department.
Step 4: Select Schools
Parents may apply to a maximum of five schools.
The department advises parents to use the Home application option at least once so that the application includes schools whose feeder zones cover the residential address.
Choosing several suitable schools can improve the range of placement options. Applying first does not automatically guarantee placement, and an online application is not the same as a confirmed school place.
Step 5: Upload or Submit Documents
Upload clear copies of the documents requested by the system.

What Is a School Feeder Zone?
A school feeder zone is the geographical area from which a public school accepts its core group of learners.
A school that appears physically close to a home address may not always be listed under the relevant feeder-zone option. The system uses the department’s official feeder-zone information rather than only walking or driving distance.
Parents can use the school-search and feeder-zone tools on the admissions website to identify schools linked to their address.
The department recommends selecting the Home option at least once during the school-selection process.
Can Parents Apply by Cellphone?
Yes. The Gauteng Department of Education says parents can complete an application using a cellphone.
Applicants should use a stable internet connection and keep screenshots or records of important confirmation messages and application reference information.
Avoid entering personal information on an untrusted device or giving login credentials to an unofficial person offering to complete applications for payment.
Help for Parents Without Internet Access
Decentralised walk-in centres are available to assist parents with online applications.
The official portal states that assistance is available at these centres from 08:00 to 16:00 during the application period.

What Happens After Applying?
Submitting an application does not mean the learner has already been placed.
The department will process applications and communicate important updates through the cellphone number used during registration. Parents should keep that number active and monitor their SMS messages and online profile.
When a placement offer is issued, the parent may be required to respond within the period stated in the message. Missing a response deadline may affect the offer.
