According to The Sun Nigeria, Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti has described his reaction after learning that his late father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, would receive a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. I was shocked when told about F…

Speaking with ARISE News in Los Angeles, Femi said the family was taken by surprise when they were contacted about the honour, which comes more than three decades after Fela’s death. He described the recognition as a meaningful acknowledgment of an artist who remained committed to his principles throughout his career.

Femi said Fela’s music stood alongside the work of the greatest composers of his generation, despite his decision to remain outside mainstream popular culture. He noted that while his father influenced many global artists, he focused primarily on achieving his artistic vision rather than commercial success.

According to Femi, the Grammy recognition validates Fela’s independent spirit and lifelong dedication to music created on his own terms. He added that the award also holds broader significance, as Fela becomes the first African musician to receive the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Femi said the honour reflects Fela’s far-reaching influence on global music, including hip-hop and contemporary pop, noting that many leading artists have acknowledged his impact over the years.
