Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has been posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first African artist to receive the honour.
Fela was selected in the Hall of Fame’s early influence category, placing him alongside notable figures such as Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons and Celia Cruz. The announcement was made during a broadcast of American Idol, highlighting the global significance of the recognition.
The Afrobeat pioneer’s induction underscores his lasting influence on modern music, particularly his fusion of jazz, funk and traditional African rhythms, as well as his outspoken political activism.
In the same announcement, Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu was recognised in the performance category. Meanwhile, high-profile nominees including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition and Pink were not selected this year.
According to organisers, the final inductees were chosen through votes cast by more than 1,200 artists, historians and music industry professionals.
The official induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
Earlier in 2026, Fela was also honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making him the first African musician to receive the distinction—further cementing his legacy as one of the most influential artists in global music history.
