Ed Sheeran has addressed concerns about the themes in his new album Play (Deluxe), clarifying that the emotional intensity in the project does not suggest any issues in his marriage to Cherry Seaborn.
The singer spoke ahead of his performance at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard at The O2, explaining that fans often interpret his lyrics as direct reflections of his personal life. He said the album captures heightened emotions, not ongoing circumstances.
Speaking at a Spotify pop-up event, Sheeran noted that songwriting typically emerges from “big extremes,” rather than ordinary days. “Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time,” he said. “You always write songs like, ‘This is the most loving I’ve ever felt, this is the happiest I’ve ever felt, this is the angriest I’ve ever felt.’”
He added that those intense emotional peaks are what inspire his music. “They’re all big extremities, and that’s what inspires the song. I think the only time the songs will ever be created, for me at least, are in those moments of big extremes.”
During his Jingle Bell Ball performance, Sheeran dedicated Heaven, one of Cherry’s favourite tracks from the album, to his wife. He told the crowd that she had asked him to ensure the moment was filmed. He added that she understands his music spans a wide emotional range. “Cherry knows she has songs like Heaven and Perfect. It’s good to be honest, and she knows I am writing songs like Don’t Look Down and Wargames.”
Sheeran emphasized that honesty in music should not be misinterpreted as personal turmoil, but rather as capturing the emotion felt at the time of writing.
