Nigerian Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said the country’s music industry would have been less exciting without his contributions, a comment that has generated varied reactions among fans and observers.
The artist made the remark in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he suggested that the absence of his music and public presence would have left the industry lacking energy. The statement quickly attracted attention online, with supporters praising his confidence and critics questioning the scale of his impact.
The comment is consistent with earlier views expressed by the singer regarding his role in the evolution of Nigerian pop music. In a previous interview with Apple Music in April 2025, Davido said activity in the industry slowed when he stepped away from social media in late 2022 following the death of his son, Ifeanyi Adeleke. According to him, both fans and critics urged him to return during the period he was inactive online.
Davido rose to prominence in 2011 after the release of his breakout single Dami Duro, at a time when a new generation of Afrobeats artists was emerging in Nigeria. Since then, he has remained one of the genre’s most commercially successful and visible figures.
Industry commentary on his influence has been mixed. Veteran music producer Samklef has previously argued that Davido’s emergence introduced intense rivalry into the industry, suggesting it altered relationships among artists who once operated with less competition.
Despite differing opinions, Davido’s remarks have once again highlighted ongoing debates about individual influence, rivalry, and legacy within Nigeria’s fast-growing music scene.
