The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has announced plans to establish a national music museum to celebrate Ghana’s musical heritage, with the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba, expected to feature prominently.
MUSIGA President Bessa Simons disclosed this during an interview at Daddy Lumba’s funeral on Saturday, December 13. He said the proposed museum will recognise several iconic Ghanaian musicians, adding that Daddy Lumba’s influence on highlife music makes him a key figure in the initiative.
Simons described Daddy Lumba as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, whose work shaped the country’s contemporary music scene and influenced generations of artists.
He said MUSIGA is committed to honouring the late musician through the planned museum and a proposed Hall of Fame aimed at recognising outstanding contributors to Ghana’s creative arts industry
.
“We are planning to have a music museum, and we know he will be a very important part of it. When our Hall of Fame comes, he has to be in there,” Simons said.
The final funeral rites for Daddy Lumba were held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi after weeks of legal disputes over his burial. Thousands of fans gathered at the Heroes Park section of the stadium to pay their last respects.
Mourners sang and danced to the musician’s songs in a mix of solemn remembrance and celebration of his legacy. Security was heightened at the venue, with police presence and snap checks to maintain order.
The burial followed a ruling by the Accra High Court, which allowed the funeral to proceed after applicants in a family dispute failed to raise GH₵2 million to sustain an injunction blocking the release of the body. Transitions Funeral Home was subsequently directed to continue with the arrangements.
The court decision ended months of uncertainty surrounding the burial. Daddy Lumba, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential musicians, leaves behind a body of work that continues to resonate across generations.
