According to Daily Post, Nigerian rapper CDQ has sparked conversation after claiming that success in the music industry is often tied to belonging to powerful groups and influential circles.
The Nowo Soke hitmaker made the remarks during a recent interview with content creator JBrandy, where he shared his concerns about what he sees as an unhealthy culture within the entertainment business.
CDQ argued that many artists struggle to get support, opportunities, and visibility unless they are connected to a particular clique, gang, or influential network. In his view, musicians who have managed to build successful careers without aligning themselves with these groups are fortunate.
The rapper suggested that talent and hard work alone do not always guarantee results in today's industry landscape. He claimed that some artists invest heavily in their careers but still fail to see meaningful progress because they lack the right affiliations.
His comments shine a light on a long-running debate in Nigeria's music scene about access, influence, and gatekeeping. While Afrobeats continues to gain global recognition and create new opportunities for artists, conversations about industry politics remain common among musicians and insiders.
CDQ also used the opportunity to call for change. He urged artists, record label executives, and other key players in the industry to move away from linking music with gangsterism and group loyalty.
As Nigeria's music industry continues to expand on the global stage, CDQ's remarks are likely to fuel further discussion about whether success is truly driven by talent and strategy—or by who artists know behind the scenes.
