“The wilderness holds answers to questions we have not yet learned to ask.” — Nancy Wynne Newhall

If you're seeking a truly wild African safari, where nature still reigns and the crowds haven’t arrived yet, Burigi-Chato National Park is your hidden gem.

Gazetted in 2019, this massive park spans 4,707 sq. km, making it Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park. It stretches from the serene shores of Lake Victoria all the way west to the border with Rwanda.

This is not your typical game drive, stop, it’s an immersion into raw, untamed beauty.

🏞️ Landscapes That Shift and Stun

The beauty of Burigi-Chato lies in its sheer variety. You’ll encounter:

  • Long hills and dramatic escarpments

  • Rocky crags and deep forested valleys

  • Vast swamps, floodplains, and grassy savannas

  • And countless freshwater lakes, including Lake Burigi, the 3rd largest lake in Tanzania

Much of the park is covered in Miombo woodland, home to a dynamic and growing population of wildlife.

🐘 Wildlife Encounters Without the Crowds

Burigi-Chato may be new, but its animal kingdom is flourishing. Here’s what you might see on a game drive or boat safari:

  • Elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, eland, impala, roan, and topi

  • Rare sitatunga antelope hiding in swampy reeds

  • Predators, including lions, leopards, and cheetahs

  • Crocodiles and hippos are lurking in the lakes and rivers

🐦 Birdwatching Paradise

Bring your binoculars. The park is a haven for:

  • Palearctic and Afrotropical migrants

  • Iconic species like the African fish eagle

  • The elusive shoebill stork, one of Africa’s strangest and rarest birds

If you're into serious birding, Burigi-Chato offers quiet, world-class observation opportunities few parks can match.

🚣 What to Do in Burigi-Chato

There’s more than just driving:

  • Game viewing by vehicle or boat

  • Guided hikes through the savannah and woodland

  • Fishing in the lakes (with permission)

  • Boating safaris to explore the untouched lake systems

📍 Getting There

  • By air: Fly into Chato International Airport, then charter a private flight to the Nkonje airstrip near Lake Burigi or Birahamulo.

  • By road: From Chato, it’s about 40 km to the Katete Gate by 4WD.

🛏️ Where to Stay

For now, accommodation is limited but growing:

  • Public and special campsites are available

  • Plans are underway to establish permanent lodges and luxury tented camps

Until then, it’s a great destination for adventurous travelers or those with mobile safari setups.

🌍 Safari Ideas

Make Burigi-Chato part of a Lake Victoria circuit. Begin or end your adventure with a boat safari linking:

  • Saanane Island National Park

  • Rubondo Island National Park

  • Musoma town on the eastern lake shore

This circuit gives you a taste of water-based safaris, birdwatching, island hopping, and hidden wildlife pockets few others ever see.

Burigi-Chato isn’t just another park; it’s an expedition into the wild, perfect for explorers who crave solitude, scale, and raw African nature.

If you want to feel like you're discovering a new frontier, this is the place. And the best part? You’ll often have it all to yourself.
