Plan a realistic 10-day Tanzania itinerary through Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Zanzibar, with daily routing, flights, costs and booking advice.

Ten days are enough to combine Tanzania’s northern wildlife circuit with Zanzibar, but only if the route respects the map. The common mistake is treating the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the coast as neighbouring stops. They are linked by long roads and small-aircraft services, so every unnecessary return journey removes time from the experience itself.

This itinerary begins in Arusha, uses Karatu or the Ngorongoro highlands as the first safari base, continues west into the central Serengeti and then flies from Seronera to Zanzibar. It suits a first-time visitor who wants serious wildlife time without reducing Zanzibar to an airport connection.

Can you see Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar in ten days? Yes, if you spend one arrival night in Arusha, two nights around Ngorongoro, three in the central Serengeti and three on Zanzibar. Fly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar instead of driving back to Arusha, and keep the final day for departure.

How This Route Fits Tanzania’s Map

Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha are the main gateways for the northern safari circuit. From Arusha, the paved road runs west towards Lake Manyara, Karatu and the Lodoare entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority gives the Arusha–Lodoare distance as 160 kilometres and says a four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential once travellers leave the main roads for Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

The Serengeti lies beyond Ngorongoro. Driving there after the crater therefore continues the journey rather than reversing it. The final link is by air: Coastal Aviation’s timetable, valid through May 2027 and updated in July 2026, lists daily Seronera–Zanzibar connections. Flights may stop in Arusha, and the airline warns that bush-flight routing and times can change with operational conditions.

This plan uses central Serengeti because it works most consistently for a first visit. It does not promise that the migrating herds will be nearby. XTRAfrica’s guide to tracking Tanzania’s wildebeest explains why rainfall and fresh grass matter more than a rigid migration calendar.

Day 1: Arrive in Arusha and Protect the First Night

Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport and stay in Arusha. Do not plan an immediate drive to Ngorongoro after a long-haul arrival unless the flight lands early and the operator has built a conservative daylight schedule.

The purpose of this night is practical: recover, check luggage, meet the driver-guide and confirm park permits, meals, drinking water and the Serengeti flight. It also creates a buffer if an international connection arrives late. Stay near Arusha for an early start, not near the airport merely to save a short transfer the following morning.
