Mexican actor Gerardo Taracena, widely recognized for his role in the 2006 historical epic Apocalypto, has died at the age of 55, according to a statement from the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences.

The Academy confirmed his death on Sunday and described Taracena as a key figure in Mexican cinema whose performances left a lasting artistic legacy. No details regarding the cause of death were made public.

In a tribute shared on social media, the Academy praised Taracena for his intense and deeply human screen presence, while extending condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Taracena gained international attention for portraying Middle Eye in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, a role that introduced him to global audiences. He later appeared in several notable films, including El Violin, Potosí, La Carga, Saving Private Perez, Sound of Freedom, and Surviving My Quinceañera.

Throughout his career, Taracena earned three Ariel Award nominations—Mexico’s highest film honor—for his performances in El Violin, Potosí, and La Carga.

He also reached wider audiences through television, most notably for his portrayal of drug trafficker Pablo Acosta in Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico, which aired between 2018 and 2021. His television credits further included appearances in Queen of the South and Netflix’s Pedal to the Metal.

Taracena’s work across film and television established him as one of Mexico’s most respected character actors, admired for his versatility and emotional depth.
