Rwandan filmmaker Alain Gilbert Umuhire has officially begun releasing his own films, marking a significant milestone after nearly a decade working in the country’s film industry.
Alain, who started his career in 2016, has built experience both behind and in front of the camera. He first appeared in productions such as Seburikoko, where he worked in various roles including extra, gaffer and assistant. Over time, he transitioned into production management and became one of the few professionals in Rwanda working as a Line Producer.
In that role, he has been responsible for budgeting, daily production planning, coordinating teams and overseeing contracts. He has contributed to several well-known Rwandan productions including Seburikoko, Citymaid, The Bishop’s Family, Indoto, Ishusho Ya Papa, Shuwa Dilu, Kaliza wa Kalisa, Sigano Ryanjye (Feature Film) and The Bridge of Christmas (Feature Film).
Alain studied Film and Television Studies at Kigali Film and Television School, where he received training in directing basics, camera work, lighting and general film production processes.
In addition to his production work, he has also acted in films such as Umuturanyi, Papa Sava, Seburikoko, Kaliza wa Kalisa and The Bridge of Christmas.
Speaking about his decision to release his own films, Alain said the move had been a long-term goal. He noted that after years of contributing to successful projects, he felt it was time to create and distribute work under his own direction.
His newly released project titled Impamvu marks the beginning of this new chapter. In selecting cast members for the film, Alain said he prioritized emerging talent, explaining that he wanted to offer opportunities to others just as he had once received.
While acknowledging that challenges remain in the industry, he expressed confidence that continued audience support would help sustain the project.
With nearly ten years of experience in production, Alain Gilbert’s transition into independently releasing films represents a new step in his professional journey within Rwanda’s growing cinema sector.
