US rapper Afroman has won a legal battle against seven sheriff’s deputies who sued him over songs and videos mocking a police raid on his home.

The case stems from a 2022 incident in which officers forced entry into the musician’s house during a drug and kidnapping investigation that did not result in any charges.

Following the raid, Afroman used home surveillance footage to create viral music videos that ridiculed the deputies. One of the videos, Lemon Pound Cake, referenced an officer allegedly eyeing food in his kitchen, while other tracks included controversial claims about the officers.

The deputies filed a defamation lawsuit, seeking $3.9 million in damages, citing humiliation, reputational harm, and emotional distress.

However, after a three-day trial, a jury ruled in favour of Afroman, effectively dismissing the claims against him.

Speaking after the verdict, the rapper celebrated the outcome as a victory for freedom of expression, stating that his work was a response to what he described as a wrongful raid.

During the trial, Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Foreman, argued that the incident itself led to the creation of the songs and that public officials should expect scrutiny and criticism.

His legal team also maintained that the lawsuit was an attempt to suppress criticism, emphasizing that public officials cannot use legal action to silence artistic or satirical expression.

The case has drawn wider attention to issues of free speech, artistic expression, and the limits of defamation claims involving public officials in the United States.
