As South Africa approaches a pivotal national election on May 29, the country grapples with a surging unemployment rate, now at 32.9% in the first quarter of 2024, up from 32.1% at the end of 2023. According to recent data from Statistics South Africa, the number of unemployed individuals increased to 8.226 million in early 2024, up from 7.895 million in the previous quarter. This uptick in unemployment figures emerges as a major issue for voters just two weeks before the elections. The African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party since the end of apartheid, faces significant political challenges amid growing public dissatisfaction due to the worsening joblessness. Since their rise to power nearly three decades ago, the unemployment rate has escalated by approximately 10 percentage points. Additionally, the expanded definition of unemployment, which accounts for those who have stopped seeking work out of discouragement, also rose to 41.9% in the first three months of the year, up from 41.1% in the preceding quarter. With the ANC at risk of losing its majority, the upcoming election could be a turning point in South African politics , driven by the electorate's critical concern over increasing joblessness. This issue not only highlights the economic challenges facing the nation but also sets the stage for what could be a significant political shift. DRC and Uganda are set to sign six cooperation accords after Kampala talks on security, trade and border projects. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda are set to sign six memoranda of understanding after the 9th session of their Joint Standing Commission in Kampala, where officials agreed to strengthen border security, trade and bilateral cooperation. The agreements are expected to be signed on Monday, May 11, 2026, at State House in the presence of Presidents Félix Tshisekedi and Yoweri Museveni . The commission met from May 8 to 10 in Kampala, with discussions focused on security cooperation, cross-border trade, infrastructure and regional stability. Ugandan media also reported that the talks opened with an agenda covering trade, security and infrastructure links between the two neighbouring countries. The planned projects include one-stop border posts and modern cross-border markets in Kasindi, Bunagana and Mahagi. Officials said experts from both sides have three months to accelerate the roadmap agreed during the session. The next step will be the formal signing of the six cooperation agreements, which are expected to guide implementation in sectors identified by the two governments. - HRW Urges Urgent Sanctions, Aid Access After Rwanda-M23 Uvira Assault
After the deadly Uvira offensive, HRW calls for urgent sanctions on Rwanda and demands immediate humanitarian access amid rising war crimes and mass displacement. Uvira, South Kivu | December 14, 2025 — The capture of the strategic city of Uvira by Rwandan forces and the M23 armed group has triggered grave concerns of war crimes and humanitarian violations, according to a New detailed report released by Human Rights Watch (HRW). The assault, which took place on December 10, followed days of heavy fighting with Congolese and Burundian forces, resulting in 74 civilian deaths, over 80 wounded, and the displacement of more than 200,000 people, including 30,000 fleeing into Burundi. The U.S. and United Nations have condemned the use of attack drones, heavy artillery, and suicide drones, confirming Rwanda’s deep military involvement, despite public denials from Kigali. The Washington Accords have not delivered security or access to aid. The warring parties are still committing atrocities and obstructing humanitarian efforts,” said Clémentine de Montjoye, senior Great Lakes researcher at HRW. A City Under Siege, Civilians Under Fire Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror across Uvira and its outskirts: In Kasenga, M23 fighters executed unarmed men, accusing them of being Wazalendo militia. In Kiliba, journalist Janvier Lwesho Nyakirigo and his brother were killed in a drone strike. In Sange, at least 36 civilians died from drone-launched explosives in the town center. Verified videos show dozens of civilian corpses, some of them children. The humanitarian crisis is growing dire. Hospitals are overwhelmed, aid routes are cut, and the World Food Programme has suspended operations in South Kivu due to insecurity. Refugees arriving in Burundi report receiving little or no assistance. Refugees arriving in Burundi report receiving little or no assistance. Rwanda’s Deep Involvement Confirmed by the U.S. In a UN Security Council emergency meeting on December 12, the United States confirmed that: ADVERTISEMENT Rwanda had 5,000–7,000 troops inside Congo before the Uvira assault. It supplied surface-to-air missiles, drones, and advanced weaponry. It provided strategic and political leadership to both M23 and the AFC (Congo River Alliance), treating the rebel group as a proxy force to serve its geopolitical ambitions. Rather than a march toward peace, Rwanda is dragging the region into instability and war,” the U.S. delegation stated. Demands for Action: Sanctions, Accountability, and Access HRW has urged: ADVERTISEMENT Immediate targeted sanctions by the U.S. and EU against Rwandan officials responsible for the abuses. A review of all military and minerals-related cooperation with Kigali. Support for the UN Commission of Inquiry on eastern DRC. Pressure on Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC to allow humanitarian access and protect civilians. Unless those responsible face serious consequences, the worst may be yet to come,” de Montjoye warned. - Why the 39th AU Summit Is a Big Test for Eastern DRC Peace Efforts
The AU Summit in Addis Ababa puts eastern DRC peace efforts under pressure as Angola proposes a Feb 18 ceasefire and talks continue. Mediation, ceasefire proposals, and parallel tracks (Luanda/Washington/Doha) are all in play but the situation on the ground remains tense. Addis Ababa hosts the African Union’s 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government on February 14–15, with leaders expected to address a packed agenda that includes water and sanitation under Agenda 2063, food insecurity, the AfCFTA , and continental security crises especially eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The summit also features a handover of the AU’s rotating chairmanship, adding a leadership transition to a moment of high diplomatic stakes. (Based on the original report published February 13, 2026.) A crowded security docket, with eastern DRC at the center While multiple crises remain on the table Libya, the Sahel, and Sudan among them eastern DRC is emerging as a defining test of whether African-led mechanisms can translate diplomatic movement into measurable change on the ground. The summit’s political weight matters because it convenes key decision-makers at a time when parallel initiatives are active but still struggling to deliver outcomes. For official summit framing, the AU has published a briefing on the session’s scope and priorities: African Union press release on the 39th Ordinary Session. Mediation is expanding on paper One pillar of the AU approach is mediation in the broader Great Lakes dispute involving Kinshasa and Kigali. The AU’s designated mediator Togo’s Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has been engaging regional actors and is expected to brief leaders on efforts intended to consolidate and align the peace process. The AU’s evolving mediation structure, including coordination mechanisms and designated facilitators, is meant to reduce fragmentation across initiatives and clarify who does what, and when. A second pillar is the push for a ceasefire. Angola has proposed that a ceasefire between the DRC government and the M23/AFC rebellion take effect at noon on February 18, following high-level talks in Luanda involving Angolan President João Lourenço, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, and AU-linked facilitators. Crucially, Angola has framed the date as conditional dependent on a public declaration of acceptance by the parties making the coming days a direct test of follow-through. The parallel tracks problem: Washington and Doha are active, but strained Continue Reading Full Article DRC PEACE EFFORT Why the 39th AU Summit Is a Big Test for Eastern DRC Peace Efforts By Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Political Analyst Serge Kitoko Tshibanda Home Comment Feb 13, 2026 May 15, 2026 4 min read Copy link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Published Updated: Mediation, ceasefire proposals, and parallel tracks (Luanda/Washington/Doha) are all in play but the situation on the ground remains tense. ADVERTISEMENT The parallel tracks problem: Washington and Doha are active, but strained Alongside AU-anchored efforts, the original report describes two additional tracks: a Washington process linked to U.S. engagement and Doha talks under Qatar’s auspices involving Kinshasa and the AFC/M23 . The challenge, as outlined, is not the lack of dialogue but the gap between agreements and implementation. Mutual accusations, delays in carrying out agreed measures, and continued insecurity have made it harder to demonstrate progress where it matters most: conditions on the ground. The summit’s significance is less about launching another initiative and more about whether leaders can do three practical things: Align the tracks (AU-led mediation, Luanda ceasefire push, Washington and Doha processes) so commitments do not contradict each other. - Two in custody after KSh11m ivory haul in Namanga; manhunt underway
Two suspects are in custody after a Namanga hotel operation seized 110kg of elephant tusks; police say a third suspect fled and is being sought. Kenyan authorities say two suspects are in custody after an intelligence-led operation in Namanga recovered elephant tusks weighing about 110 kilograms, while a third suspect is being pursued after allegedly fleeing as officers moved in at a hotel where an ivory deal was suspected. According to the account published by Kenyans , a multi-agency team drawn from the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) acted on intelligence that a major ivory transaction was about to occur in the border town. Officers reportedly went to a local hotel where suspects were believed to be meeting a potential buyer. At the hotel, officers reportedly found two Tanzanian nationals in the company of a Kenyan citizen. The report says that when law enforcement identified themselves, one of the Tanzanian suspects escaped, triggering a manhunt, while the remaining two suspects were arrested and taken into custody for questioning. Investigators say the arrested suspects later led officers to parked vehicles, where additional exhibits were recovered. The report states that a Toyota Mark X linked to one suspect contained 20 pieces of tusks, weighing about 110kg, concealed in the boot. In a second vehicle a Nissan Fairland officers reportedly recovered a weighing machine, which investigators treated as evidence of active trading. The report says the tusks, vehicles and other exhibits were seized, and the suspects were taken to Namanga Police Station pending processing and arraignment. Why the “manhunt” element matters in trafficking cases Once a suspect flees at the point of interdiction, investigators often shift quickly from seizure-and-arrest to identifying support networks who arranged transport, storage, buyers and communications. International anti-wildlife crime forums have repeatedly emphasised integrated enforcement customs, police and environmental authorities working together because trafficking networks frequently operate across jurisdictions and supply chains .
