Tunisian opposition leader Abir Moussi has been sentenced to two years in prison amid growing concern over President Kais Saied's crackdown on political dissent. Abir Moussi, considered one of the most important and famous Tunisian politicians and activist, has been sentenced to jail for criticising the country’s legislative process, according to reports . A Tunisian court has sentenced opposition politician Abir Moussi to two years in prison following her vocal criticism of the country’s electoral process. Moussi, leader of the Free Destourian Party and a prominent opponent of President Kais Saied, was convicted on charges including attempting to alter the structure of government, inciting violence, and disrupting public order. Moussi’s sentencing on Thursday marks a new chapter in what rights groups are calling an escalating campaign to silence dissent in Tunisia. She has been held in detention since 2023, after trying to submit an appeal challenging presidential decrees ahead of local elections. The move is widely perceived as part of a broader authoritarian shift under President Saied, whose administration has been accused of targeting opposition figures, civil society actors, and journalists. The government has not commented publicly on the verdict. Moussi is one of dozens of political figures currently facing criminal charges in Tunisia. In April, a Tunisian court handed down lengthy prison sentences ranging from four to 74 years to 37 individuals, including lawyers, activists, and politicians. Amnesty International condemned the trial as "farcical," urging Tunisian authorities to quash the verdicts and drop all politically motivated charges. Human rights organizations warn that the country, once hailed as a democratic success story in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, is regressing into authoritarian rule. Tunisia, which received international praise for its peaceful 2011 revolution and democratic transition, has seen sweeping political changes since Saied took office in 2019. After assuming power, President Saied suspended parliament in 2021, restructured the judiciary, and rewrote the constitution in 2022—moves that critics argue were designed to centralize authority and sideline political opposition. These actions have sparked fears over the erosion of judicial independence and civil liberties. Among the high-profile individuals currently detained are Rached Ghannouchi, the former speaker of parliament and ex-leader of the Ennahda Party; Sihem Bensedrine, a human rights lawyer and former head of the Truth and Dignity Commission; and student activist Rached Tamboura, imprisoned for anti-government graffiti. Family members of detainees, including Ghannouchi, have raised concerns about poor prison conditions and restricted access to medical care. Rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International are calling on Tunisia’s international partners, particularly the European Union, to reassess cooperation agreements unless the country improves its human rights record. Police said he had been hijacked and kidnapped in Katlehong while fetching his wife from church on Tuesday night. According to TimesLIVE , residents found Ndlovu's body in Thokoza on Wednesday morning. His wife, Portia Ndlovu, later identified him at the mortuary. Family spokesperson Eugene Mthethwa said the family was awaiting further information from authorities about the circumstances of his death. His work extended beyond presenting: he also operated through Michaelowen Productions and was involved in radio production connected to Premier Soccer League coverage. XTRAfrica previously covered the fatal hijacking of footballer Luke Fleurs , a separate case that also drew national attention to vehicle-related violence. ADVERTISEMENT From sports broadcasting to music-rights activism In later years, Ndlovu became increasingly visible in disputes over music rights, royalties and intellectual property. He was associated with Artists United and with the SABC Summer Song of the Year project. In 2020, News24/City Press reported that Ndlovu accused the SABC of breaching an agreement involving his company and the Summer Song of the Year concept. The broadcaster disputed aspects of his claims, and the conflict moved through legal and regulatory channels. The Public Protector's closing report later documented parts of the wider dispute around Michaelowen Productions, SABC records and royalty payments. His activism placed him in a difficult area of the creative economy where broadcasters, producers, collecting societies and performers often disagree over ownership and payment. That part of his career also connects with broader questions about the public broadcaster. XTRAfrica has reported on a High Court order involving former SABC board members and on DJ Cleo's departure from SABC's Radio 2000 , both of which show how South Africa's broadcasting institutions remain important to the careers and livelihoods of creative professionals. Owen Ndlovu's family Public reporting identifies Portia Ndlovu as his wife. TimesLIVE reported that she was present when the hijacking occurred and later identified his body at the mortuary. A later family appeal, reported on 17 September, asked people to stop circulating graphic images of Ndlovu's body and referred to the impact on his children. The family has not publicly disclosed a verified number or names of the children in the sources reviewed for this profile. Personal & Family Status Details Marital status Married at the time of his death Spouse or partner Portia Ndlovu Children Family statements indicate he had children; number and names not publicly confirmed as of September 2026 ADVERTISEMENT Owen Ndlovu career timeline Year Event Significance Before 2020 Worked as an SABC sports presenter and football commentator Built national recognition through sports broadcasting 2017-2019 Michaelowen Productions worked around SABC Summer Song of the Year projects Expanded his role from broadcasting into production and music-industry business 2020 Public dispute with SABC over the Summer Song of the Year concept intensified Made him a visible advocate in copyright and royalty debates 2020s Continued music-rights and artist-advocacy work Extended his public profile beyond sport 16 September 2026 Family confirmed his death after a Katlehong hijacking and kidnapping Triggered tributes across broadcasting, sport and music circles His career sat at the intersection of sport, radio, television and artist rights. That combination made him more than a former presenter: he became a recurring public voice in arguments about who owns creative ideas and who gets paid when those ideas generate value. For readers following South African entertainment history, XTRAfrica's obituary of actor Seputla Sebogodi provides another recent example of how long-running television and radio figures shaped public culture across generations. In a message issued after the results were formally announced on January 17, Ruto said Museveni’s victory showed continued public confidence in his leadership and in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). He also described the election as peaceful and said it reflected Uganda’s “democratic maturity,” while reaffirming Kenya’s willingness to work with Kampala on shared regional priorities. Uganda’s Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, declared Museveni the winner with 7,946,772 votes—about 71.6%—extending his rule into a seventh five-year term for 2026–2031. Museveni is 81. Opposition candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu , popularly known as Bobi Wine, was announced in second place with roughly 24.7% (about 2.7 million votes). Kyagulanyi rejected the results, alleging fraud and interference in the process and urging supporters to respond peacefully. The vote drew international and regional attention amid claims of irregularities and a heavy security environment. Media reports also noted an internet shutdown and problems with biometric voter verification in some areas during the election period. Museveni has led Uganda since 1986. Over the years, constitutional changes removed presidential term limits and later lifted the upper age limit, allowing him to continue contesting elections. - Uganda–U.S. Ties Under Review After Muhoozi Sanctions Warning
Uganda’s army chief warns of retaliatory sanctions as U.S. Senate leaders urge a review of security ties after disputed polls. KAMPALA/WASHINGTON — Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has warned that Kampala could retaliate if the United States imposes sanctions on him or Uganda, sharpening an already tense exchange as senior U.S. lawmakers press for a reassessment of relations following concerns over Uganda’s recent elections. In posts on X by Muhoozi said any sanctions by “spoilers in the USA” would be met with reciprocal measures, adding that Uganda seeks peace but retains the ability to defend itself. The remarks were his most direct response yet to public calls in Washington for targeted restrictions as reported by Chimpreports . The warning came after U.S. Senator Jim Risch, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, described Uganda’s elections as a “hollow exercise” and urged the U.S. administration to review its security relationship with Kampala, including whether sanctions should apply to specific actors. In his statement , Risch explicitly named Muhoozi as a potential target. Risch argued that while Uganda remains an important regional security partner, governance concerns including allegations of political violence, intimidation of opponents and misuse of state resources should trigger closer scrutiny of U.S. engagement. He also cited broader regional implications, warning that Uganda and Tanzania were moving along “similar paths,” as other countries in the region prepare for elections. Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, struck a more measured tone, saying relations between Kampala and Washington remain strong and mutually beneficial, and emphasising long-standing cooperation on regional security and commercial interests. While no fresh sanctions have been announced, the exchange points to a potential policy review track in Washington one that could affect military cooperation if political rhetoric hardens into formal measures. The U.S. has previously used targeted tools, including Global Magnitsky-linked authorities, against Ugandan officials. In December 2021, the U.S. Treasury designated then-military intelligence chief Abel Kandiho over alleged serious human rights abuse . A parallel State Department action also cited torture allegations in its public designations. For now, the most immediate “review” signal is political: pressure from Capitol Hill to reassess the terms and safeguards of U.S.-Uganda security engagement, against a backdrop of governance and election credibility concerns and an increasingly public Ugandan pushback framed as sovereignty and reciprocity. source : Chimpreports Continue Reading Full Article ELECTIONS MONITORING Uganda–U.S. Ties Under Review After Muhoozi Sanctions Warning By The Editorial Staff Public Services The Editorial Staff Home Comment Jan 26, 2026 May 15, 2026 3 min read Copy link Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Published Updated: KAMPALA/WASHINGTON — Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has warned that Kampala could retaliate if the United States imposes sanctions on him or Uganda, sharpening an already tense exchange as senior U.S. lawmakers press for a reassessment of relations following concerns over Uganda’s recent elections.
