What Burundi Took Away From the Dubai World Governance Summit

Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye has returned to Bujumbura following a working visit to the United Arab Emirates, where his delegation held talks aimed at deepening diplomatic and economic cooperation, according to Burundi’s presidency spokesperson.

The visit took place alongside the World Governments Summit in Dubai (Feb 3–5, 2026), held under the theme “Shaping the Governments of the Future.”

On February 6, 2026, President Ndayishimiye was received in Abu Dhabi by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation particularly across economic and investment-related areas, including renewable energy among other shared priorities.

Economic cooperation: technology, rail, and mining

Burundi’s presidency said further discussions were held with an Emirati minister of state on economic cooperation, including:

• Potential structuring projects in rail transport and the mining sector.

The Burundian side has not announced signed agreements or project timelines, framing the engagement as discussions on prospects and partnership opportunities.

Summit agenda and Burundi’s 2026 AU focus

Burundi’s delegation also highlighted that summit sessions covered issues such as renewable energy, food security, population growth pressures, artificial intelligence, and broader scientific challenges. Officials said water and sanitation drew particular attention for African participants, aligning with the African Union’s 2026 theme on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems.
