  • Sifuna Rally Reaches Jacaranda as Opposition Pushes Unity

Edwin Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi rally reached Jacaranda Grounds after a Nairobi procession, with leaders calling for opposition unity before 2027. NAIROBI, Kenya : The Linda Mwananchi movement's Nairobi mobilisation reached Jacaranda Grounds on Sunday afternoon after a procession through the city, turning an earlier convoy into a completed high-profile rally. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna used the event to renew his call for a united opposition before the 2027 election, while other leaders promoted their own national and county ambitions. The rally proceeded under a visible police presence after authorities warned against large political gatherings in restricted parts of the central business district. No independently verified attendance figure was available at the reporting cutoff. What happened at the Linda Mwananchi Nairobi rally? Edwin Sifuna and allied leaders moved from an All Saints Cathedral service through Nairobi markets and Eastlands before supporters gathered at Jacaranda Grounds. Sifuna called for opposition unity ahead of 2027, while Babu Owino used the tour to advance his Nairobi agenda. From the city centre to Jacaranda The movement began the day with a church service at All Saints Cathedral before travelling through Marikiti, Gikomba, Burma Market, Jogoo Road and parts of Eastlands. The Star reported at 3:02 PM EAT that supporters were gathering at Jacaranda Grounds as the convoy approached. Citizen Digital carried a live feed from the rally, and full-speech video published later showed Sifuna addressing the crowd at Jacaranda. The public footage verifies that the event reached its final venue. It does not provide a reliable basis for an exact crowd total. Earlier in the day, People Daily reported that the convoy continued through the CBD despite a police warning about rallies in restricted areas. The report said leaders addressed supporters at Marikiti before moving toward the planned Jacaranda gathering. The completed rally is a meaningful shift from the morning's anticipated itinerary. It shows that the movement carried out its Nairobi route and assembled at its symbolic final venue without the disruption that had marked some recent opposition events. Sifuna's national message Sifuna framed the mobilisation around the 2027 election and the need for opposition leaders to cooperate. The Star reported his earlier Marikiti remarks , in which he said defeating President William Ruto would require him to work with leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. The Star reported his earlier Marikiti remarks , in which he said defeating President William Ruto would require him to work with leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. That call is politically important because Linda Mwananchi contains figures with different ambitions and party histories. The rally did not constitute a formal coalition agreement, party nomination or electoral endorsement by all opposition groups. It demonstrated mobilisation and a public message, not a settled presidential ticket. The event also gave Sifuna a platform beyond his current role as Nairobi senator. His political visibility has grown through a series of Linda Mwananchi tours, while debate continues over how the movement relates to the Orange Democratic Movement and Kenya's wider opposition. ADVERTISEMENT XTRAfrica's report on Kenyan leaders honouring Raila Odinga explains the symbolic contest over the late opposition leader's legacy. Sunday's Jacaranda rally drew on that history, but it did not establish that one person or movement has inherited Odinga's national coalition. Babu Owino sharpens his Nairobi campaign Embakasi East MP Babu Owino used the mobilisation to criticise the Nairobi County Government and outline priorities he says he would pursue. Citizen Digital reported that he addressed unemployment, waste collection, water access, health facilities and county-worker pay. People Daily also reported a pledge by Owino to raise the minimum pay of police officers to KSh100,000 if the movement forms the next government. That statement is a campaign promise, not an enacted salary policy. It has no effect on current police pay and would require legal, budgetary and administrative steps if ever pursued. The rally therefore carried two electoral tracks: Sifuna's national positioning and Owino's challenge to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Both remain political ambitions rather than completed nominations. Trending Now US Democrats' Rwanda Record: Peaceful Change and Congo Sovereignty . ADVERTISEMENT Security claims require careful separation Police deployed across the city after warning that rival groups could cause disruption. The warning said lawful assembly at Jacaranda would be protected, while large processions in parts of the CBD faced restrictions. Reports that some businesses closed and that the procession continued despite the warning are supported by videos and Kenyan media. More inflammatory descriptions of Nairobi as a “battlefield” are not supported by an official casualty report or verified evidence of citywide fighting from Sunday's event. The caution matters because recent Linda Mwananchi events have included disputed security incidents. XTRAfrica previously documented the competing accounts after James Orengo said his vehicle was shot at and burned , and separately explained why an Othaya church tear-gas incident became a political flashpoint . Those earlier episodes should not be projected onto the Jacaranda rally without new evidence. The next verifiable developments will be any police after-action statement, the movement's announced next stop and formal decisions on opposition cooperation. Crowd claims, sabotage accusations and electoral predictions should remain attributed until supported by records beyond partisan statements. • UN Report: M23/AFC & Rwanda Linked to War Crimes in Kivu | XTRAfrica

UN report links M23/AFC and Rwanda’s forces to war crimes in North & South Kivu: massacres, forced deportations, child recruitment, and sexual violence. Overview The UN fact‑finding mission’s report on the situation in North and South Kivu documents numerous violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and human rights law (IHRL) attributed to the armed group Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) and its political platform, Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), many of which were enabled by Rwanda’s military support. The report notes that Rwanda provided training, intelligence, and operational support to M23 and deployed Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) personnel in the Kivus. Witnesses often identified perpetrators as “Rwandan” through their language, accents, or uniforms. The fact‑finding mission, therefore, considers Rwanda responsible for crimes directly committed by its forces and for failing to stop violations committed by M23. Structured list of crimes Summary M23/AFC and Rwanda’s role – The report shows that M23, backed by Rwanda’s army (RDF), captured territory in the Kivus, killed civilians and soldiers, and committed numerous war crimes. Rwanda provided training, intelligence, and troops for these operations and bears responsibility for its forces’ actions. Massacres and executions – M23 conducted brutal massacres. In July 2025, it executed hundreds of mostly Hutu civilians in Rutshuru, including children who were hacked with machetes. During cordon‑and‑search operations, it executed at least 21 civilians and killed children for minor reasons. Attacks on peacekeepers and indiscriminate firing – M23 and RDF shelled populated areas and even targeted a UN base, killing peacekeepers. Their indiscriminate use of heavy weapons caused many civilian deaths. Suppression of civil liberties – After taking control of cities, M23/AFC imposed new administrators and taxes, replaced civil servants, and used intimidation, threats, and killings to silence activists and journalists. Detention, torture, and forced recruitment – M23 detained thousands, including children, under horrific conditions. Detainees were beaten, tortured, executed, and forced into military training or labour, with Rwandan personnel often present. Children were conscripted and used in hostilities, which is a war crime. Sexual violence – The group used rape and sexual slavery as tools of terror, with women, girls, men, and LGBT individuals subjected to gang rapes, often in detention, and sometimes exchanged for food. Witnesses often identified perpetrators as “Rwandan” through their language, accents, or uniforms. The fact‑finding mission, therefore, considers Rwanda responsible for crimes directly committed by its forces and for failing to stop violations committed by M23. Structured list of crimes Responsible actor Type of crime Page/section reference Brief description M23/AFC (with RDF support) War crimes – wilful killing and murder Sec. II.B & VII.A – territorial expansion/war crimes During the January 2025 offensive on Sake and Goma, M23 and RDF used heavy artillery and indiscriminately fired on civilians; they also executed surrendering FARDC soldiers. The fact‑finding mission found reasonable grounds that M23 and RDF committed war crimes involving murder and willful killing. M23/AFC (supported by RDF) Massacres/summary executions Sec. III.D – July 2025 offensive & Sec. VI.A In July 2025, M23 launched an offensive in Bwisha (Rutshuru) and survivors described the summary execution of hundreds of mostly Hutu civilians , including children and infants, with machetes and axes. Earlier, M23 executed at least 21 civilians (including teenage boys) during cordon‑and‑search operations and shot people for minor infractions. M23/AFC Deliberate killing of children & entire families Sec. VI.A – summary executions M23 combatants deliberately killed children and entire families; survivors recounted that children were shot without reason and infants were hacked with machetes. M23/AFC Attack on peacekeepers & indiscriminate shelling Sec. VI – conduct of hostilities Witnesses said M23 and RDF targeted a UN base in Goma, killing three peacekeepers, and used heavy weapons that caused numerous civilian casualties. M23/AFC (with RDF involvement) Suppression of civic space & intimidation Sec. VI.B – intimidation & Sec. III.B After capturing Goma and Bukavu, AFC/M23 appointed new administrators, imposed new taxes, and replaced civil servants. They threatened, detained, or killed activists and journalists, including singer Delcat Idengo, banned media from broadcasting government information, and introduced a “10 houses system” to surveil residents. M23/AFC Unlawful detention & enforced disappearances Sec. VI.C – detention M23 detained thousands of civilians (mainly men and boys) during cordon‑and‑search operations. People were taken from hospitals and homes, some were held for ransom, and many were sent to “training” camps; the fate of many detainees remains unknown. M23/AFC and RDF Torture and cruel treatment, deaths in custody Sec. VI.D – detention conditions Detainees were held in cramped, dirty cells and subjected to beatings, torture, denial of food, and summary execution. Teenage boys were held with adults; guards included Rwandan nationals and senior M23 commanders. M23/AFC Forced recruitment & conscription of children Sec. VI.E – forced recruitment Thousands of detained civilians – including adolescents – were taken to M23 camps where they were forced to undergo military training or perform labour. Witnesses saw Rwandan guards, including uniformed RDF officers, in these camps. The fact‑finding mission found that M23 committed the war crime of conscripting or enlisting children under 15. M23/AFC Rape, gang rape & sexual slavery Sec. VI.F – sexual violence; War crimes findings The report documents widespread rape and gang rape of women, girls, men, and LGBTQ individuals by M23 fighters, both in homes and in detention. Some victims were exploited for sex in return for food or given as “wives”; sexual violence was used to punish or intimidate. The FFM concluded that M23 committed the war crimes of rape and sexual slavery. M23/AFC Forced displacement, deportations & destruction of IDPs’ shelters Sec. VI.G – forced displacement M23 ordered tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) around Goma to dismantle their shelters and return home; those who resisted were beaten or threatened. Later, M23 expelled returning families and deported groups of Congolese citizens to Rwanda after branding them “Rwandan”; the group burned their Congolese identity cards in Goma’s transit centre. Such forced transfers were found to constitute war crimes. M23/AFC and RDF Enslavement and forced labour Sec. VI.E & crimes against humanity section Detainees in M23 camps were compelled to build fortifications, carry weapons, and perform domestic or agricultural work. Women and girls were forced to serve as cooks or sex slaves. These acts formed part of widespread enslavement and forced labour, which the FFM classified as crimes against humanity. M23/AFC Crimes against humanity Sec. IX.B – crimes against humanity & Sec. VII.A The FFM found reasonable grounds that M23 committed crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, rape and sexual slavery, enslavement in training camps, enforced disappearance, and deportation/forcible transfer of population. These crimes were part of a widespread and systematic attack against civilians perceived as opposing M23, carried out according to an organizational policy aimed at consolidating control. RDF (Rwanda Defence Force) Direct participation in M23 operations & war crimes Sec. II.B – territorial expansion & Sec. IX.A Rwanda’s army trained and fought alongside M23 during the assault on Sake and Goma. The FFM received credible allegations that RDF personnel participated in M23’s abuses, including at detention and training camps, and that Rwanda provided significant military, logistical, and material support. Rwanda was therefore deemed responsible for crimes committed by its forces and for failing to use its influence to stop violations. AFC/M23 Illegal taxation & appropriation of resources Sec. III.B – AFC administration After capturing Goma and Bukavu, AFC/M23 installed its own administrators and introduced a tax system to divert revenue, including from mining, replacing civil servants with loyalists. While not labelled explicitly as “looting”, this systematic appropriation of resources and replacement of local authorities is a form of exploitation linked to the armed group’s control. M23/AFC Disruption of civic life & forced governance Sec. III.B & Sec. VI.B M23/AFC’s imposition of parallel governance structures, appointing governors, levying taxes, and deploying Rwandan nationals, along with the surveillance “10 houses system,” severely restricted civic space and imposed de facto rule. Summary M23/AFC and Rwanda’s role – The report shows that M23, backed by Rwanda’s army (RDF), captured territory in the Kivus, killed civilians and soldiers, and committed numerous war crimes. Forced displacement and deportation – M23 forced tens of thousands of displaced people to leave shelters and later expelled them again, deporting many to Rwanda and burning their identity cards. This constitutes a war crime. Enslavement and exploitation – Civilians in M23 camps were forced to work, build defences, and serve commanders; women and girls were kept as “wives” or cooks. The report classifies these acts as crimes against humanity due to their systematic nature. Illegal taxation and governance – M23/AFC set up parallel administrations and imposed new taxes on the population, including on mining, demonstrating how it exploited captured territory and undermined legitimate governance. ADVERTISEMENT These findings illustrate a pattern of widespread, systematic abuses by M23/AFC, enabled by Rwanda’s support. The crimes include massacres, summary executions, torture, forced labour, sexual violence, and the conscription of children – all of which may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. • Zulu girls with the Evolution of the Zulu Naked Dress Code

Zulu girls embrace tradition with vibrant Zulu naked dress codes symbolizing pride, identity, womanhood, and life stages in their cultural heritage. The Zulu naked dress code is deeply rooted in cultural significance and historical traditions, reflecting the Zulu people's values and social structures. Historical and Cultural Context The traditional attire of Zulu women, which often includes a beaded skirt while leaving the breasts exposed, carries a multitude of meanings. This dress style is not about nudity for its own sake, but rather a powerful symbol of fertility, strength, and respect for ancestral heritage. The tradition emphasizes the Zulu women's pride in their bodies and their roles within the community, celebrating womanhood and unity ( Inside Port Harcourt ) ( Inside Port Harcourt ). Zulu women have long embraced their traditional attire, which consists of intricate beadwork and cowrie shells, as a vibrant expression of their identity and femininity. This style of dress is not just a reflection of beauty and strength but also serves as a powerful symbol of unity among the Zulu community. By adorning themselves in these customary outfits, Zulu women not only celebrate their heritage but also reinforce the close bonds within their community, showcasing their pride and solidarity through their distinct and meaningful attire. This practice is a testament to the enduring cultural values and the role of women in preserving and promoting these traditions, highlighting their pivotal role in the social fabric of the Zulu people. Symbolism of Colors and Attire The colors used in Zulu attire are also significant. For example, red symbolizes bravery and can denote a woman in the military or a married woman. Green is associated with fertility, often worn by unmarried women or those who are pregnant. Blue signifies mourning, typically worn by women who have lost a loved one ( Inside Port Harcourt ). Zulu beadwork is a visual language that tells stories through the use of color and pattern. Each color has a positive and negative meaning, and the meaning depends on the context and how the colors are used together. For example, white is a symbol of purity and spirituality, but can also mean sadness and loneliness when used with black In Zulu culture, the color black symbolizes marriage; it is customary for a Zulu bride to receive a black kilt from her fiancé, which she wears around her waist, replacing the traditional white string. The colors yellow and pink are also imbued with deep meaning, representing the prospects of children, wealth, and fertility that marriage can bring. These colors are not only significant in their cultural symbolism but also in highlighting the transitions and expectations in a Zulu woman's life journey. Changes Over Time Traditionally, Zulu women would adopt this form of dress during mourning periods to show respect and readiness to grieve. Over time, this practice has evolved to symbolize resilience and strength. In contemporary settings, while modern clothing is prevalent in urban areas, many rural communities continue to adhere to traditional dress as a form of cultural preservation and resistance against historical colonial efforts to erase their identity ( Inside Port Harcourt ) Newlywed Woman The painting depicts a young bride from the Ngwane community in the KwaZulu Natal Drakensberg, captured during a celebration. Adorned in vibrant, colorful attire and beads, she sits with a pink apron and a walking stick placed before her knees, symbols that denote her newlywed status. This artistic representation celebrates her transition into married life, highlighted by traditional symbols that are significant within her culture. ADVERTISEMENT The Umemulo Ceremony A related aspect of Zulu culture is the Umemulo ceremony, marking a girl's transition into womanhood. This rite of passage involves specific traditional attire, rituals, and communal celebrations, reinforcing the importance of cultural traditions. During Umemulo, girls wear elaborate beadwork and undergo various traditional practices, signifying their readiness for marriage and their new roles within the community ( Briefly ) ( The Grace ) Zulu celebrates a woman's transition into adulthood and readiness for marriage . The ceremony typically takes place when a young woman reaches puberty, between the ages of 13 and 16, but can be performed at any age Misconceptions There are several misconceptions about the Zulu naked dress code. It's not a strict 'dress code' requiring nudity but rather a traditional way of dressing passed down through generations. The nudity is not sexualized within the Zulu culture but symbolizes a return to essential values, free from modern material distractions. This dress style highlights cultural identity and the importance of embracing and respecting traditional practices ( Inside Port Harcourt ) ( Inside Port Harcourt ) By understanding the deeper meanings behind the Zulu naked dress code, one can appreciate the rich cultural heritage and the resilience of the Zulu people in maintaining their traditions amidst an ever-modernizing world. Celebrating and respecting these traditions fosters cultural diversity and contributes to a more inclusive and harmonious society. The festival is characterized by vibrant dances and songs performed by the maidens. A notable dance often showcased during the Reed Dance Festival is called 'Indlamu.' • 8 Best Spots to See Graffiti and Street Art in Luanda

Discover the best places to see graffiti and street art in Luanda, from Cazenga murals to city centre walls, plus local tips and 2025 highlights. Street art in Luanda isn’t a fad; it’s an act of cultural memory. In 2025 local collectives and touring artists turned neglected walls into canvases that celebrate Angola’s kingdoms, amplify marginalized voices and make bus stops feel like galleries. Here’s where to see the freshest murals (and snap a few selfies) when you’re in the city. 1. Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues Cazenga’s main artery becomes an open‑air gallery every year thanks to Projeto Xindar , a street‑art festival that invites collectives from across Angola to paint along the busy highway. For the 2025 edition the theme was “Os Reinos de Angola” and a temporary art village popped up on Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues near the Feira da Filda. Graffiti Angola One’s organizers promised live painting, debates and cultural activities celebrating identity and gender equality ; locals and travellers packed the sidewalk to watch artists transform blank walls into portraits of kings, queens and traditional symbols . It costs nothing to wander the avenue; bring a bottle of water and a hat because there’s little shade. Expect to spend about USD 3 ( ≈ 2 800 AOA ) on a shared taxi from downtown to Filda. Tip: follow the festival’s Instagram feed for schedule updates and then visit in the late afternoon when the heat eases the murals glow under the golden light and you might catch a live performance on the makeshift stage. 2. Filda Cazenga: Lunda‑Tchokwe mural Just off Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues, a large mural honours the Lunda‑Tchokwe kingdom . Painted during the 2025 Xindar festival, the piece by artist @gatopre7o uses ochre reds and black lines to depict warriors and traditional masks. Graffiti Angola One explained that it brings “the strength of our roots and the essence of our people to the wall”. Locals pose for photos in front of the giant faces; the mural has become a point of pride for Cazenga’s youth. Viewing is free and open 24/7. Plan USD 2–3 ( ≈ 1 800–2 700 AOA ) for a mototáxi from Largo das Escolas to the Filda neighbourhood. Don’t skip the pastelaria across the road they sell mussungo (palm‑wine donuts) and will happily tell you the myths behind the Lunda‑Tchokwe kingdom. You can see the mural’s vivid colours on the artist’s post . On 28 June 2025 the community radio REAT reported that urban artist Bleck Soldiers completed a mural honouring the Mucubal people, nomadic herders from southern Angola . The article notes that the project highlights traditional clothing, clan structure and the Mucubal’s reverence for cattle, creating a visual bridge between Luanda’s urban youth and remote communities. There’s no entry fee; a shared taxi from the city centre should be around USD 2 ( ≈ 1 800 AOA ). The mural sits on a residential street , so be respectful ask residents before photographing them and stop by the local market for caldo de cana (sugar‑cane juice). 4. Wall of Citizenship / Mural da Homenagem: Cazenga A few blocks from Cazenga’s municipal market stands the Wall of Citizenship , a long concrete barrier that has served as a community canvas since 2011. In 2025 photographer Gelson Canelas posted a new work called “Mural da Homenagem – street art Cazenga para o mundo” . ADVERTISEMENT The piece features portraits of local human‑rights activists with bold slogans and is part of a tradition in which activists and artists repaint the wall to honour Angolans who fought for social justice . The wall doubles as an outdoor classroom; graffiti workshops and hip‑hop cyphers happen spontaneously on weekends. There’s no charge to view the mural. Bring USD 1 ( ≈ 900 AOA ) for a chilled bag of water sold by nearby vendors, and visit during the morning when paint fumes have dissipated. If you’re lucky, you’ll meet some of the artists and watch them at work. For a glimpse of the homage mural, check out the December 2025 post . 5. Paragem Eamba 2 (Zamba 2) - Pink October mural In October 2025 muralist Oksanna Dias turned the Eamba 2 bus stop in the Zamba 2 area into a pink‑tinged shrine. Her reel announcing the “Segundo mural sobre Outubro Rosa” (“Second Pink October mural”) shows her painting bright silhouettes of women and messages encouraging breast‑cancer screening . The work is part of her wider campaign to spotlight women’s health using public art. The bus stop is public and free. Take a candogueiro (minibus) toward Samba and ask to get off at “Paragem Eamba dois”; the ride should cost USD 0.50–1 ( ≈ 450–900 AOA ). After snapping photos, wander into nearby Samba 2 for grilled fish and live semba music. Watch Oksanna reveal the mural on her reel. 6. Art Club by Kosmos: Zona Verde, Benfica Not all of Luanda’s street art lives on highways; some of it blossoms in private courtyards. The Art Club by Kosmos , a cultural hub in the Zona Verde housing project (Benfica), hosts exhibitions and encourages mural painting on its outer walls. On 14 July 2025 community platform Nós é Comunidade highlighted a piece from Oksanna Dias’s series “Entre Raízes, narrativas femininas” . The series blends ancestral symbolism and feminist narratives, reflecting how women’s stories are rooted in the land . Inside the club there’s a café serving ginguba (ground‑nut) coffee and a small shop selling prints by local artists. Entry is usually free; workshops and talks might cost USD 5 ( ≈ 4 600 AOA ). Arrive on a Saturday afternoon when DJ sets keep the vibe relaxed and ask the staff about upcoming spray‑painting sessions. You can see the July 2025 post that introduced Oksanna’s series. • DRC Secures $1.2 Billion Health Deal with the United States

DRC and the US agreed a $1.2bn health partnership, pairing $900m in US support with $300m from Kinshasa to boost UHC and disease control. The Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States have signed a $1.2 billion health agreement that signals a shift in their bilateral relationship. Rather than relying solely on traditional donor support, the deal introduces a shared-responsibility model, with Kinshasa committing $300 million of its own funds alongside up to $900 million from Washington. At a time when the country faces recurring outbreaks and high preventable mortality, the agreement ties international partnerships to domestic investment. DRC–US $1.2bn health accord is a turning point A new DRC–US health agreement matters because it shifts the relationship from classic donor support toward a shared-responsibility model with Kinshasa committing domestic money alongside Washington to strengthen a health system under pressure from recurring outbreaks and high preventable mortality. Signed on February 26, 2026 at the Prime Minister’s office in Kinshasa, the memorandum totals $1.2 billion, split between up to $900 million from the United States and $300 million pledged by the Congolese government , according to officials present at the ceremony led by Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka. The practical significance is in what the money is meant to protect: the partnership prioritizes the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, alongside maternal and child health, continued polio eradication, stronger epidemiological surveillance, and expanded training and support for health workers in areas that directly affect everyday access to care and the country’s ability to detect and contain outbreaks. Prime Minister Suminwa framed the deal as a step toward effective universal health coverage, arguing that building a “solid, accessible” system requires not only external support but also sustained national financing, positioning the $300 million domestic contribution as part of Congo’s “health sovereignty” agenda. From the US side, Chargé d’Affaires Ian McCary described the agreement as “pragmatic and ambitious,” emphasizing collaboration aimed at saving lives and boosting health security for both countries. The partnership is expected to run over five years, aligning with a broader US push for bilateral health MOUs in Africa that encourage greater self-sufficiency . In short, the deal’s importance isn’t just the headline figure; it’s the attempt to lock in a co-funded path to stronger primary care and disease control, while tying health outcomes to budget choices inside the DRC. • DRC Targets Banana–Kasumbalesa Road Connection by End of 2027

DRC aims to enable continuous road travel from Banana to Kasumbalesa by the end of 2027, with about 600 km of work remaining on the RN1 corridor. The government says work remains on approximately 600 kilometres of the 3,300-kilometre RN1 corridor linking the Atlantic coast to southeastern DRC. KINSHASA — September 3, 2026 — The Democratic Republic of the Congo is targeting continuous road travel between Banana and Kasumbalesa by the end of 2027 as work advances on several sections of National Road No. 1. Infrastructure and Public Works Minister John Banza said approximately 600 kilometres still require work along the roughly 3,300-kilometre corridor connecting Banana in Kongo-Central with Kasumbalesa in Haut-Katanga. The RN1 crosses several important population and economic centres as it links the country’s Atlantic coastline to its southeastern mining region. According to the minister, construction is continuing on the Tshikapa–Kananga and Kananga–Mbuji-Mayi sections. He identified the Mbuji-Mayi–Nguba stretch as one of the most important remaining parts of the wider corridor. Banza said the Mbuji-Mayi–Nguba section could be delivered by the end of 2027 if work proceeds as planned. Completing that connection would make it possible for vehicles to travel continuously between western and southeastern DRC. The minister also said motorists can currently travel from Banana to Tshikapa, while work continues farther east. A Strategic Link Across the DRC A functional Banana–Kasumbalesa road would connect communities, agricultural regions, commercial centres and mining areas across several provinces. The corridor could make it easier to move passengers and goods within the country while reducing travel delays and transport costs associated with damaged or disconnected road sections. ADVERTISEMENT It could also strengthen access between the mineral-rich southeast and the Atlantic coast, where the DRC is developing the deep-water Port of Banana. The project is therefore important not only for passenger mobility but also for domestic trade, agricultural distribution and the country’s wider logistics strategy. Other National Roads Included in the Programme During the same infrastructure update, Banza discussed work on other national routes. The minister said sections of the RN2 between Mbuji-Mayi and Bukavu were under construction, with completed roadwork reported around Mbuji-Mayi and Kabinda. The government is also planning a 714-metre bridge across the Lualaba River at Mbanga to improve access toward Maniema. • A senior Kenyan police officer was fatally shot after opening fire on Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti in a Nairobi court. The incident occurred shortly after Magistrate Kivuti ruled to cancel the bail of the officer's wife, who had absconded. Chief Inspector Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, in charge of a police station in Londiani, western Kenya, was angered by the decision and shot Magistrate Kivuti, injuring her in the hip. Immediate response from other officers in the courtroom resulted in Kipruto being shot dead. In the chaos, three other officers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment along with Magistrate Kivuti. The judiciary explained that the magistrate had revoked the bond of an accused person who had failed to appear in court and provide satisfactory explanations. Kipruto, the husband of the accused, was present in court for undisclosed reasons and reacted violently to the ruling. The shooting has shocked Kenyans, as it is unprecedented for such an incident to occur within a courtroom, despite past accusations of police involvement in extrajudicial killings. The judiciary has pledged to enhance security measures to ensure the safety of judicial staff and court users. Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Winfridah Mokaya, expressed wishes for Magistrate Kivuti's swift recovery and extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer. The national police service has launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to the shooting.
