Kate Winslet has spoken publicly about a discouraging remark she received from a drama teacher early in her life, describing it as one of the most damaging moments of her childhood.
In an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the British actress said a teacher told her she would need to accept stereotypical roles if she wanted to succeed in acting. Winslet recalled being advised to “settle for the fat girl parts,” a comment she said stayed with her for years.
Winslet explained that the remark was made while she was still a student and beginning to take acting seriously. At the time, she described herself as “a little bit stocky” and said the comment came shortly after she signed with a child acting agent.
Now 50, Winslet reflected on how such statements can affect young people, noting that adults sometimes say “appalling things to children” without fully understanding the long-term impact.
Despite the early setback, Winslet went on to build a highly successful career. She rose to international prominence with her role in James Cameron’s Titanic and later won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2008 for The Reader. Her film credits also include Avatar, The Holiday and Revolutionary Road.
Winslet is currently marking another milestone in her career with her directorial debut, Goodbye June, adding to her decades-long presence in the film industry.
