Nigerian-American Afrobeats star, songwriter and a producer Davido

Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke, is a Nigerian-American singer, songwriter and record producer who helped carry Afrobeats from Lagos into global pop culture. Born in Atlanta and raised largely in Lagos, he broke through with “Dami Duro” before building a catalogue that includes “Aye,” “If,” “Fall,” “FIA,” “Unavailable” and “With You.”

His energetic delivery, emotional directness and instinct for collaboration have sustained a career spanning more than 15 years. Davido also shares music and personal updates through his official X account while leading Davido Music Worldwide, better known as DMW.

Who is Davido? Davido is a Nigerian-American Afrobeats star, songwriter, producer and label founder. Born in Atlanta in 1992 and raised in Lagos, he rose to fame with “Dami Duro,” built DMW, released five studio albums and earned five Grammy nominations while helping African pop reach larger international audiences.

Early Life and Musical Roots

David Adedeji Adeleke was born on November 21, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He is 33 years old as of July 21, 2026, and will turn 34 on November 21. Although American-born, Davido grew up mainly in Lagos and consistently presents Nigeria as the cultural centre of his music.

His father, Adedeji Adeleke, is a Nigerian businessman and education investor. His mother, Veronica Imade Adeleke, was a university lecturer who died in 2003, when Davido was a child. Her memory remains important in his family life and public story. Davido has spoken of his father as a major influence, even though the two initially disagreed about music as a career.

Davido attended school in Lagos before studying business administration at Oakwood University in Alabama. Music increasingly took over his attention: he bought production equipment, made beats and recorded with relatives and friends. After leaving Oakwood, he returned to Nigeria and pursued music while completing a degree. TheCable’s account of his education records that he graduated from Babcock University with a music degree in 2015.

This combination of formal study and practical experimentation shaped him as more than a vocalist. From the beginning, he understood production, artist development and the importance of surrounding a record with the right team.

Breakthrough and Rise to Fame

Davido began recording professionally around 2011. “Back When,” featuring Naeto C, introduced him, but “Dami Duro” became the decisive breakthrough. Its driving beat, memorable hook and confident performance captured the energy of a new Nigerian pop generation.
