Ayra Starr a Nigerian Afropop and R&B singer

Ayra Starr is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose deep-toned Afropop voice has carried a Cotonou-and-Lagos upbringing onto the global stage. Born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, she moved from teenage modelling and online song covers to Mavin Records, then announced herself with “Away,” 19 & Dangerous and the worldwide crossover “Rush.”

Her official X profile reflects the same direct, playful persona heard in her music. By August 2026, Starr had earned two Grammy nominations, a BET Best International Act award and consecutive MOBO Best International Act wins. Her next chapter is already dated: the third album Starr Girl is scheduled for 14 August 2026.

Who is Ayra Starr? Ayra Starr is a Nigerian Afropop and R&B singer born in Cotonou, Benin. Discovered through an original song posted online, she became a Mavin Records star, broke internationally with “Rush,” released two acclaimed albums and grew into a two-time Grammy nominee and major global award winner.

From Cotonou Choirs to Lagos: Formative Life and Creative Roots

Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe was born on 14 June 2002 in Cotonou, Benin. She is 24 years old as of 10 August 2026. Her childhood unfolded across Cotonou, Lagos and other cities as her family moved, exposing her to different languages, communities and musical traditions. Mavin’s official Ayra Starr biography confirms her birth name and Cotonou–Lagos upbringing.

Music began as a family activity. Starr grew up with four siblings; her mother encouraged the children’s creative interests, while her brother Dami later became a close songwriting partner. She sang in choirs, wrote songs and absorbed music ranging from Nigerian pop and gospel to Rihanna, Angélique Kidjo and 1990s icons. A Teen Vogue profile records that her mother saw Lagos as the place where that ambition could become a career.

Education came first. Starr attended university unusually young and completed her studies before fully pursuing music. In a Pitchfork interview, she connected that discipline to her family’s support and expectations:

“I come from a very humble background, and I still have the mindset to be very grounded.”

Her first professional lane was modelling. She signed with Quove Models in 2018, appeared in campaigns and learned how image, styling and performance could work together. Music, however, remained the intended destination.
