Maya Boyd is the American Broadway actress Marvel Studios has chosen to play Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, in its coming X-Men film.
The casting represents a dramatic leap in visibility for a performer whose career has so far been built mainly on the New York stage. Before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Boyd made her Broadway debut while still at university, led the cast of & Juliet and appeared in a revival of August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.
Marvel announced Boyd as Storm during its D23 presentation in Anaheim, California. The studio’s announcement was quickly confirmed by Variety, The Associated Press and Entertainment Weekly. The film is scheduled for release on May 5, 2028.

Boyd is American, but Storm is one of Marvel’s most important characters of African heritage, with deep links to Kenya and Wakanda in the comics. Those two identities should not be confused: the actress’s nationality and the character’s fictional background are separate facts.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled the principal cast at D23. Alongside Boyd, the announced actors include Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister.
Variety’s Australian edition published its detailed casting report at 10:05 a.m. AEST (UTC+10) on August 16, 2026. Boyd’s name then showed a delayed regional search wave. In a live Google Trends snapshot reviewed for this article, “Maya Boyd actress” registered 1,000-plus searches in Kenya, up more than 1,000%, with the trend beginning roughly 11 hours before the scan. Zambia also showed 1,000-plus searches, up more than 300%, although that wave had begun around 22 hours earlier. Google did not display a Breakout label.
