FOLA a Nigerian Afro-R&B and Afrobeats singer
FOLA, born Folarin Odunlami, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter whose soft but urgent delivery has made emotional honesty commercially powerful within modern Afrobeats. Known as Folapondis on social media including his authenticated X account he emerged from church singing, school-age experiments and difficult working years in Ibadan before “alone” changed his scale in 2024.
The following year, his debut album catharsis turned romance, struggle and recovery into one of Nigeria’s most sustained chart stories. By July 2026, FOLA had added a national No. 1 single, an international headline tour and “treat u right” with Ayra Starr to a career that had only recently entered the mainstream.
Who is FOLA? FOLA is Nigerian Afro-R&B and Afrobeats singer Folarin Odunlami. He broke through with “alone,” signed to Bella Shmurda’s Dangbana Republik, and released the chart-leading 2025 debut album catharsis. His intimate songwriting and supple voice have made him one of Nigeria’s defining new-generation melodic artists.
How catharsis turned a breakthrough into chart history
FOLA entered September 2025 with enough momentum to make a strong debut album possible. What followed was larger and more durable than a typical newcomer’s opening week. Released on 4 September through Dangbana Republik and EMPIRE, catharsis gathered 11 songs around love, anxiety, ambition, faith and emotional release. “you,” “eko,” “lost,” “healer” and “caricature” gave listeners different doors into the same interior world.
The record’s staying power became the headline. In February 2026, TurnTable Charts reported that catharsis had spent 14 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Nigeria’s Official Albums Chart, the longest reign by a debut album in the chart’s history at that point. Every song had also appeared on the Official Nigeria Top 100 during its first chart week. That depth mattered: FOLA was no longer succeeding only as a guest voice or through one popular single.
The album’s title explains why the music connected. In his Apple Music track-by-track account, FOLA described the project as emotional repair rather than a victory lap:
“This album is like building a soul hospital, looking for something to cleanse and repair your soul.”
The medical image fits his gentle delivery. catharsis gave listeners a language for release while proving that vulnerable Afropop could sustain repeat listening at national scale.
