Africa BRICS Summit Russia Comments Made by Russian President Vladimir Putin During the 2024 BRICS Summit Dallas Hughes Oct 24, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link © Photohost agency brics-russia2024.ru/Go to photobank Below are some of the comments made by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a news conference following the BRICS summit in Kazan: ABOUT DPRK TROOPS AND ESCALATION IN UKRAINE "Let's start with the first part of your question (about the photos showing the presence of North Korean troops on Russian territory). Photos are a serious thing, if there are photos, then they reflect something. I would like to draw your attention to the fact that it was not Russia's actions that led to the escalation in Ukraine, but the 2014 coup d'etat, supported primarily by the United States. It was even publicly announced how much money the then US administration spent on preparing and organizing this coup d'etat. Isn't this a path to escalation? And then we were deceived for eight years when they said that they wanted to resolve the conflict in Ukraine peacefully through the Minsk agreements. Later, and we heard this too, a number of leaders of European countries said directly that they were deceiving us because they used this time to arm the Ukrainian army. Isn't that so? It is. Now the next steps of escalation were that Western countries began to actively arm the Kiev regime. What has it come to? To the direct participation of NATO military personnel in this conflict. Because we know what and how is done when unmanned marine vehicles are launched in the Black Sea. We know who is present there, from which European NATO countries, and how they carry out this work. The same applies to instructors, military personnel - not mercenaries, but military personnel. The same applies to the use of high-precision weapons, modern ones. Including missiles such as Atacms, Storm Shadow, and so on. Ukrainian military personnel cannot do this without space reconnaissance, target designation and Western-made software. And only with the direct participation of NATO officers. As for our relations with the DPRK. Today, I think, our treaty on strategic partnership has just been ratified. There is Article 4. We have never doubted that the North Korean leadership takes our agreements seriously. But what and how we will do is our business. Within the framework of this article. First, we need to conduct appropriate negotiations regarding the implementation of Article 4 of this treaty. But we are in contact with our North Korean friends and we will see how this process develops." ON THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CRISIS AROUND UKRAINE "Everyone is determined to end the conflict as quickly as possible and preferably by peaceful means. You know that China and Brazil have put forward an initiative at the General Assembly in New York. Many countries are participating. BRICS supports this initiative. And we, in turn, are grateful to our partners for their attention to this conflict and for seeking ways to resolve it. ON TRUMP'S ALLEGED THREATS TO STRIKE CENTER OF MOSCOW "The first part - is it possible to threaten? You can threaten anyone. There is no point in threatening Russia, because it only encourages us. But I do not recall such a conversation with Mr. Trump. Now is a very acute phase of the election campaign in the United States, and I suggest not to take statements of this kind seriously. But what Mr. Trump said recently, and what I heard, he said about the desire to do everything to end the conflict in Ukraine. I think he says this sincerely, and statements of this kind, no matter who makes them, we certainly welcome. ABOUT CONTACTS WITH TRUMP As for contacts with Mr. Trump. This is something that has been constantly discussed for more than one year. At one time, we were accused of this, and Trump himself of being somehow connected with Russia. Then, as a result of an investigation in the United States itself, everyone came to the conclusion, including in Congress, in my opinion, that this was complete nonsense, that nothing like this had ever happened. It did not happen before, and it does not happen now. And how Russian-American relations will be built after the elections, this depends first of all on the United States. If the United States is open to building normal relations with Russia, then we will do the same. If they do not want to, then we do not have to. But this choice is up to the future administration." ABOUT THE ISOLATION OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION You know, we are receiving different signals from our Western partners regarding possible contacts. We did not close ourselves off from these contacts. And when we hear that we refuse, I refuse such conversations, contacts, including with European leaders, I want to tell you that this is a lie. We did not refuse and are not refusing now. Someone wants to renew relations with us - please, we talk about it all the time, but we do not impose ourselves. As you can see, we live, work, develop normally, our economy is growing. ABOUT THE COMMON PAYMENT SYSTEM OF BRICS As for SWIFT and some alternatives... We have not created and are not creating alternatives for anyone. But, nevertheless, the issue is very important today. One of the key problems is the problem of settlements. And therefore we are following the path of using national currencies - this is well known. As for settlement systems, we use the already created Russian system for exchanging financial information, created by the Central Bank of Russia. Other BRICS member countries also have their own systems, we will use them too, we are already using them and will develop this interaction. But we are not inventing any separate common system yet. What we have is, in principle, sufficient. We only need to make appropriate decisions at the administrative level in a timely manner. We discussed this with our colleagues and will follow this path. ABOUT INTERBANK COMMUNICATION IN BRICS We will continue to strengthen interbank communication and work on creating mechanisms for mutual settlements in national currencies that are independent of external risks. ABOUT OPEN BRICS In Kazan, we confirmed that BRICS is not a closed format. It is open to all who share the values of BRICS, and its members are ready to work on finding joint solutions without external dictates or attempts to impose only some narrow approaches on anyone. Africa | Foreign Relations SADC member states Grateful for UN Support for their troops in DR Congo Peace Efforts Mbeki edmond Aug 18, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa was elected as the new head of SADC for the next year The Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders have expressed their commitment to supporting their troops stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). At the recent SADC summit in Harare, Zimbabwe, the heads of state and delegations gathered for the closing ceremony. The Economic Community of Southern African States (SADC) welcomed the efforts of the African Union and the United Nations to explore "various ways to support" the SADC troops currently deployed in the DRC. SADC forces from Malawi, South Africa, and Tanzania were deployed to eastern DRC late last year to assist government forces in countering the M23 rebel group. The United Nations has accused Rwanda of backing the rebels, a claim Rwanda denies. Earlier this month, the UN Security Council voted to provide technical support and equipment to SADC troops in the DRC as part of the SAMIDRC mission. However, Rwandan envoys criticized the resolution, warning that it could escalate tensions in the Great Lakes region, particularly with South Africa. The SADC summit also acknowledged the efforts of Angolan President João Lourenço in mediating peace talks between Rwanda and the DRC. Lourenço reported that both countries had reached an agreement on a ceasefire and announced that talks would resume on August 20. He emphasized that Angola, as a mediator, had presented a peace proposal to both nations, which is currently under review and will be discussed by ministers from the DRC and Rwanda. The summit also addressed other regional issues, including the completion of the SADC mission in Mozambique. The organization commended member countries that contributed troops and resources to restore peace in the conflict-ridden Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique. Additionally, the meeting highlighted an agreement between the governments of Maputo and Kigali. Notably, Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi announced his resignation, which will take effect after the upcoming October elections. Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa was elected as the new head of SADC for the next year, and Madagascar's Andry Rajoelina is set to succeed him in 2025. However, only three heads of state—Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, Azali Assoumani of Comoros, and Roopun Prithvirajsing of Mauritius—were present at this year's summit. SADC, comprising 16 member states, continues to focus on fostering economic development, promoting good governance, and ensuring security and lasting peace in the region. "I never initiated a fight with anyone. They went to sit and said 'we have to drop him, we have to finish him off.' I regarded him as my brother. If I must be challenged one day and be pushed, I will talk. Don’t push me," Malema declared. The fallout stems from years of camaraderie dating back to the ANC Youth League. Shivambu's alleged decision to sideline Malema during his resignation announcement deepened the rift. Shivambu described their bond on a podcast as political, dismissing notions of true brotherhood: "Sometimes this so-called brotherhood thing is not brotherhood. It borders on gangster relationships." Despite the tension, Malema maintains his respect for Shivambu, even entrusting him with family matters. “If I die, you must contact uncle Floyd so you guys work together with your mother on the programme of the funeral,” Malema told his son. Shivambu’s exit in August was described by Malema as a loss akin to his mother’s passing. The EFF plans to elect new leaders next month to fill Shivambu’s vacancy. Malema also alleged on an EFF podcast that Shivambu once chased a school principal with a knife during his youth. As the party prepares for its upcoming elective conference, the strained ties between the two former allies continue to dominate headlines. Africa | Analysis & Opinion Kenya Junet Mohamed’s Gag Order Sparks Debate in ODM Over Potential Alliance with Ruto Mbeki edmond Nov 3, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga engages in a conversation with National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed A recent directive from National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has stirred concern within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Junet’s gag order prevents party members from engaging with other parties, specifically barring them from direct interaction with President William Ruto. ODM members have been instructed to go through Junet or parliamentary leadership for any political engagements outside the party. This move is aimed at maintaining unity within ODM, yet some members see it as restrictive. The directive comes amid ODM's ambiguous stance on its relationship with Ruto. Though officially the party denies any formal alliance, they have taken some collaborative steps, such as joining efforts in Parliament to support certain actions against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. There is also talk of a formal coalition, especially since Ruto recently appointed five ODM members to his Cabinet. Some ODM members, like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, emphasize the need to address the pressing issues affecting Kenyans, such as the high cost of living, rather than pursuing alliances. Others, like MP Caleb Amisi, believe joining a coalition with Ruto’s UDA party would alienate ODM’s core supporters. In contrast, Siaya Governor James Orengo advocates for a formalized agreement to ensure ODM gains a clear stake in government policies and initiatives. These tensions echo ODM’s historic alliance with Ruto in 2007 when Ruto supported Raila Odinga’s presidential bid. Today, a renewed alliance between Ruto and Raila offers stability to the President, who is drawing increased support from Raila’s strongholds. This evolving relationship leaves ODM members split, with some favoring a structured alliance and others firmly against it, wary of losing the party's identity and mission. Africa Local News South Africa Interpol's Most Wanted German Fugitive Arrested at OR Tambo Airport louis Buyisiwe Nov 18, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link A German man, wanted by Interpol for alleged drug trafficking, was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport during a routine border operation. The Border Management Authority (BMA) revealed that the man had been evading capture for eight years. The suspect, who initially traveled from South Africa to Turkey using a reportedly fraudulent Israeli passport, was returned to South Africa. Upon arrival, BMA officials noticed his German accent, despite his claim of being an Israeli national. Verification with the Israeli Embassy confirmed that he was not an Israeli citizen. "Interpol was contacted and the suspect was found to be on the red list of the most wanted and had evaded arrest for drug trafficking for the past eight years," explained BMA commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato. Further investigation revealed that the man had an international arrest warrant and had been living in Malawi under a false identity with a Malawian temporary residence permit. He was found to have used German and Israeli passports and was suspected of stealing the Israeli identity. Interpol promptly took him into custody, where he remains while awaiting extradition to Germany. Dr. Masiapato highlighted the importance of this arrest, stating, "This interception underscores the critical role the BMA plays in safeguarding South Africa's ports of entry and collaborating with international security agencies to combat transnational crime. Our robust systems and partnerships with Interpol and other global entities have proven indispensable in protecting our nation's security and integrity." He added that this incident "sends a clear message that South Africa's ports are fortified against individuals who seek to exploit them for illegal purposes." Just a day before the arrest, Dr. Masiapato and Brigadier Ntime Mokhine, executive director of Interpol NCB Pretoria, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Pretoria to strengthen their collaboration in enhancing security at South Africa's ports of entry.
