Meta Platforms is set to introduce monetization opportunities for Nigerian content creators through ads and other features by June 2024, announced Nick Clegg, the company's President of Global Affairs. This initiative aims to retain top talent within its ecosystem, following the successful launch of "Ads on Reels" in select countries in 2023, which rewards creators based on the viewership of their content.
During a week-long tour of Meta's key African markets, including South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, Clegg met with leading Nigerian creators in Lagos. He highlighted upcoming monetization tools like in-stream ads, Instagram stars, and gifts, aligning with Meta's global offerings.
Clegg's visit coincided with discussions on improving internet connectivity, referencing Meta's recent deployment of a 45,000km subsea cable system in Lagos and Uyo. This infrastructure is designed for enhanced resilience, addressing recent disruptions experienced across Africa due to subsea cable damages.
Acknowledging the underutilization of broadband capacity, a challenge previously noted by Funke Opeke, CEO of MainOne, Clegg mentioned discussions with Nigerian officials aimed at optimizing internal connectivity through external expertise and investment.
