Africa | Analysis & Opinion I am going to fight Kagame's government at any cost Dianna Tran Sep 24, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Politician Paul Rusesabagina, who is in opposition to the government of Rwanda, says that he is going to mobilize a large number of those opposed to the Rwandan government to change the regime in that country. This statement was made by Paul Rusesabagina during a speech he delivered last week in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The interview took place in one of the most prestigious hotels in Brussels, where security was tightly managed by his vigilant supporters. Each attendee had to present an invitation and identify who invited them, including journalists. In a two-hour conversation, Paul Rusesabagina told his guests that regardless of the circumstances, a new coalition of opponents to the Rwandan government will emerge, committed to using all means necessary to effect change in Rwanda. Responding to a question from one of the participants, he said: "You know that they imprisoned me and kidnapped me. So now, even if I lose my head, I don't want to leave politics. That is why all the power of dialogue, elections, and even force, if necessary, will be used. In the coming days, we will launch our platform [forum], and you will see that we have more power than others.” Paul Rusesabagina, however, refrained from disclosing the new name of the militant group and its potential members, although he confirmed that it is composed of opposition to the Rwandan government, both inside and outside the country. Paul Rusesabagina had announced his resignation from politics when he was released by the government of Rwanda. However, after the interview, he told BBC Gahuzaamiyango that it was merely a temporary break. "Actually, I did not give up on politics; rather, there were directives for me. I was supposed to take a political leave to rest, as I had been tortured in prison. I needed to take a short break, so now I am going to fight the Kigali government through this platform [the forum]." "We are with the politicians who are in Rwanda, but I am not naming them for their safety... and all those outside who disagree with the government of Rwanda are with us, and soon you will know our name." On the question of whether the group opposing the Rwandan government will use the electoral process to gain power, Paul Rusesabagina said in a loud voice that all methods are possible. "If you object to the applause, it is necessary to enforce it, but our goal is the process of democracy and dialogue, and we are many; that is, Rwandans need us to save them, and we will soon achieve it." Rusesabagina concluded by saying that he is sure he will be harmed by the Rwandan government because of that statement, where he expressed suspicion that he could be killed, but he continued to say that he is not afraid because he knows he is supported both inside and outside of Rwanda. Africa | Protests & Movements KARASIRA AIMABLE Calls for SOS After Being Imprisoned and Having His Property Seized Alphonse Sep 5, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Aimable KARASIRA UZARAMBA, Freedom fighter in Rwanda One of Rwanda's freedom fighters, currently imprisoned at Mageragere Prison, a national prison in Rwanda, has spoken out after attending a court hearing. In his statement, he compared the Rwandan Constitution and laws to a dwarf, implying their ineffectiveness or limitations. He added, "You cannot imagine how difficult it is for 1994 genocide survivors to live alongside those who killed our families while struggling to survive on their own. It's like being burned in a charcoal process." He also claimed that the second-in-command of the Rwanda Correctional Service had tortured him, just as he did to Paul Rusesabagina and other journalists and freedom fighters, such as Hakuzimana Abdullah Rachid, who have been left to rot without any sunlight. He further alleged that they had been locked up with notorious criminals, such as Kazungu Denis, one of Rwanda’s most infamous killers. Meanwhile, he suggested that public figures like former Minister Edouard Bamporiki and former Western Province Governor Emmanuel Gasana appear to be imprisoned, but in reality, they are not. He claimed that it seemed like they were on holiday, with former retired Major General Emmanuel Gasana even allegedly fleeing the prison to attend parties and ceremonies hosted by his family regularly. In conclusion, he made a plea for human rights organizations and humanitarian NGOs to intervene, as they did for Paul Rusesabagina. Africa | Domestic Politics Nigeria Aiyedatiwa and APC Rally for Progress: Tinubu Urges Support in Ondo Election Serge Kabongo Nov 13, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Bola Tinubu President Bola Tinubu has labeled opposition party members as "reactionary politicians." This statement was made on Wednesday in Akure during the grand finale of the campaign rally for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Ondo State's upcoming governorship election. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu questioned whether past governors of the state, living or deceased, would have supported any reactionary parties. He emphasized that voting for the APC ensures continued progress and development in the South-West region. Using the occasion to announce the approval of a federal teaching hospital for the state, Tinubu said: “If Ajasin were still alive, is he going to vote for the APC or reactionary party? “If Akeredolu were to be alive, is he going to vote for the APC or the reactionary party? “Would Mimiko vote for the APC or reactionary party? “I urge you to come out en masse to vote for APC for the people of the South-West. Ondo State has two senior ministers, to whom much is given, much is expected.” The president urged voters to support the APC for continued progress in the state. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the APC candidate, assured voters of his loyalty and commitment to the state’s progress. Reflecting on his time with the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa pledged to build on the foundation of his predecessor and do even more for Ondo State. At the rally, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, declared that the APC was fully prepared for victory, aiming to win across all 18 local government areas. Similarly, the Chairman of the APC Campaign Council for the Ondo Election, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, encouraged supporters to focus on voting rather than engaging in conflicts with opposition members. “Nobody should fight with the opposition other than speaking with their vote for APC,” he said, expressing confidence in the party’s success and promising gratitude to the electorate for their support. The National Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Abdulahi Ganduje, also pledged his support for Aiyedatiwa and presented the party’s flag to the candidate and his running mate, Dr. Olayide Adelami. This gesture signified the party’s unity and determination to secure victory in the forthcoming election. - APC Explains Excluding Obaseki from Edo Inauguration Over Disruption Concerns | Xtrafricahttps://static.wixstatic.com/media/67cd72_881d1b7cd5ee447b850fa81621df8adc~mv2.jpeg/v1/fill/w_554,h_554,al_c,q_80/images%20(4).jpeg
Africa | Domestic Politics Nigeria APC Explains Excluding Obaseki from Edo Inauguration Over Disruption Concerns Mbeki edmond Nov 10, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Godwin Obaseki Governor of Edo State Nigeria The All Progressives Congress (APC) transition committee announced on Sunday that outgoing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki was not invited to Senator Monday Okpebholo's inauguration as the state's new governor, claiming Obaseki intended to disrupt the ceremony. Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate, was declared governor-elect after defeating his primary opponent, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 15 other candidates in the September 21, 2024, governorship election. Okpebholo will succeed Obaseki, whose eight-year term concludes on November 12, 2024. Prince Kassim Afegbua, an APC transition committee member, stated in a press release titled “Obaseki and his Lamentations” that rather than working toward a smooth transition, Obaseki was creating obstacles. Afegbua denied Obaseki’s claim that the governor-elect had borrowed between N2 billion and N5 billion from nearly N27 billion set aside for projects and other inauguration obligations. Obaseki recently expressed his concerns about not being invited to the inauguration, claiming, “We have almost N27 billion to pay for projects and obligations, but they have started blowing it, and they have gone to borrow money for the inauguration which is going to cost them N2 to N5 billion. That is the money they will first take from the treasury... It is like they are starting a brand new government and a brand new State." In response, the APC transition committee described Obaseki’s comments as “generously laughable and self-indicting,” noting that an outgoing leader would normally oversee the inauguration in other contexts. The statement added that despite their attempts to cooperate, the APC had faced “frustration and a deliberate plot” from Obaseki’s administration, which they alleged was impeding the transition with unnecessary decisions. Afegbua stated that the committee had rejected the state government’s request for an inauguration budget. The governor-elect then personally assumed the inauguration’s financial responsibilities, scaling back on planned activities for a more modest ceremony. “We have not borrowed a kobo from anywhere. We are not Governor Obaseki and his profligate self,” Afegbua stated, emphasizing the governor-elect’s intent to focus on serving Edo’s citizens rather than extravagant displays. Afegbua further alleged that most government vehicles had been taken by officials, leaving only one operational vehicle at the Edo State Government House. "Why should we borrow money because of the inauguration? Every vehicle has been carted away. Is that a government that is interested in inauguration?" he questioned. He said Ndlozi has renewed his membership and remains part of the EFF. This statement comes after rumors suggested Ndlozi might leave the party following the departure of key members like Floyd Shivambu. Ndlozi's position in the party has been questioned recently, but Malema urged members not to believe rumors unless they hear from EFF leadership. Speaking outside the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, Malema highlighted the party's unity and the strong turnout at the march. “They think they can divide this organisation. They will never divide this organisation. We are one thing, marching to the National Prosecuting Authority as a collective of leadership that is united more than ever," said Malema. He dismissed claims that Ndlozi was banned from a past assembly, calling such stories “shebeen gossip” and “toilet discussions.” Malema added, “Dr Ndlozi is a member of the EFF, he's a leader of the EFF and no organisation can claim him except for the EFF.” Malema asked supporters to ignore baseless rumors and focus on strengthening the party. “You must not listen to gossip from drunkards. Africa | Elections Ingabire Questions Legitimacy of Kagame’s Landslide Victory with lack of fairness and competition Ayize claire Jul 17, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire has dismissed President Paul Kagame’s landslide electoral win, challenging the legitimacy of an election she claims lacked genuine competition. Provisional results announced by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) showed Kagame receiving 99.15 percent of the votes, a total of 7,099,810 out of 7,160,864 counted. His opponents, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana, garnered only 38,301 votes (0.53 percent) and 22,753 votes (0.32 percent), respectively. Ingabire, a former convict, was barred from running in the election. She has criticized the election as neither free nor fair and called on President Kagame to open up Rwanda’s democratic space. Ingabire argues that the lack of real competition undermines the legitimacy of Rwanda's democracy and restricts the electorate’s ability to choose their leaders. In March 2024, Rwanda’s High Court denied Ingabire’s application for rehabilitation, preventing her from regaining her civic rights, including the right to travel and participate in elections. She has since taken her case to the East African Court of Justice (EACJ) seeking interim measures to prevent the harm caused by her exclusion from the presidential race. This case is still pending. Responding to Kagame’s victory, Ingabire emphasized that the results, where Kagame secured over 99 percent of the vote, highlight the lack of competition. Ms Ingabire said it would not have happened if there was a level playfield. “The fact that President Kagame has won with over 99 percent shows that there was no competition,” she said. Ingabire, who has been a vocal critic of Kagame’s administration, left Rwanda for the Netherlands in 1994. She founded a political party in 2006 and returned to Rwanda in 2010 to participate in the presidential election but was arrested, tried, and sentenced to 15 years in prison for inciting divisionism and conspiring against the government. In 2017, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights ruled that Rwanda had violated her rights to freedom of expression and defense. She was released on a presidential pardon in September 2018 after serving eight years. Ingabire has also sought permission to visit her ailing husband in the Netherlands and hopes she will be allowed to leave the country now that the elections are over. Meanwhile, Kagame’s competitors have conceded defeat, as he prepares for his fourth term. Speaking at the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) headquarters in Kigali after the interim results were announced, Kagame thanked his supporters and emphasized the trust placed in him. Polling was smooth, with many voters dressed in traditional attire and polling stations decorated like wedding venues. The NEC allowed voters to cast their ballots at any polling station, a departure from previous elections. Voting ended at 3 pm, with immediate counting, and results from each polling station were consolidated at the district level before being transferred to the national tallying center. Provisional results will be announced on July 20, with final results declared on July 27. They all pleaded not guilty to 16 charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bello, the first defendant, strongly denied the accusations during the session overseen by Justice Maryann Anenih. His lawyer, JB Daudu (SAN), requested bail for him. However, EFCC lawyer Kemi Pinheiro opposed the request, arguing it was no longer valid. Daudu clarified that the relevant bail motion was filed on November 22, supported by affidavits and a written statement. Referring to a court document as "Exhibit A," he said Bello’s court appearance showed his respect for the law. The EFCC wanted the trial to begin immediately, even ready to call its first witness. However, Bello’s lawyer objected, saying they were served the charges late at night on November 26 and needed time to prepare. Africa Geopolitics Somalia Somali Government Forces and Al-Shabab Clash in Deadly Battle Near Kismayo Alphonse Nov 7, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link On Wednesday, intense clashes in southern Somalia led to the deaths of at least 11 regional and federal government forces, according to officials. The fighting broke out near Wayaanta, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Kismayo in Jubaland state after government forces launched an assault on a suspected militant gathering spot. Three officials, who requested anonymity as they are not permitted to speak with the media, informed VOA Voice of Africa that in addition to the 11 fatalities among government soldiers, over 20 others were wounded. One official claimed that more than 20 al-Shabab militants also lost their lives in the battle. Last year, Somali forces conducted an operation in the same area, during which an al-Shabab commander, believed to be a deputy emir, was killed, according to regional sources. During that operation, the U.S. military provided support by executing a “collective self-defense” airstrike against al-Shabab in Wayaanta, resulting in the deaths of three fighters. Al-Shabab has waged a conflict against Somali governments since 2006, maintaining control over large rural areas in south-central Somalia. After the Somali president assumed office in May 2022, local fighters, backed by federal forces, succeeded in reclaiming significant areas in central regions from al-Shabab. Somalia’s intelligence and security agency reported that last Sunday, a 12-hour operation near Yaaqle, about 50 kilometers north of Mogadishu, led to the death of 27 al-Shabab militants. The agency stated that the operation targeted militants preparing to attack civilians, and during the mission, vehicles and other equipment were also destroyed. Despite the recent setbacks, al-Shabab remains a threat to both Somali and African Union forces, continuing to carry out deadly attacks. On the same day that Somalia’s intelligence reported the operation, two African Union soldiers were killed, and a third was injured in an al-Shabab mortar attack on their base within Mogadishu's international airport perimeter. - NBA Under Fire for Partnering with Rwanda's Repressive Regime | Xtrafricahttps://static.wixstatic.com/media/67cd72_9fddf03dee1643d68dc534b9e46413a0~mv2.webp
Africa | Analysis & Opinion NBA Under Fire for Partnering with Rwanda's Repressive Regime Mbeki edmond Aug 28, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link NBA Criticized for Partnership with Rwandan Dictator Paul Kagame bu US senators The NBA is facing sharp criticism for its relationship with Rwanda's authoritarian leader, Paul Kagame, whose regime is widely condemned for brutal repression. U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) sent a letter to NBA commissioner Adam Silver, accusing the league of "putting profit over principle" by partnering with Kagame. In the letter, The senators wrote that, " Anyone who dares to question Kagame's rule -- whether it be opposition candidates or the free press -- is jailed, disappeared or brutally murdered. " The senators highlighted the NBA's hypocrisy in promoting social justice at home while ignoring Kagame's oppressive tactics abroad. Kagame, in power since 2000, has crushed dissent, silenced opposition, and allegedly orchestrated disappearances and killings. Yet, the NBA has maintained its partnership with his regime, central to launching the Basketball Africa League. The senators demanded clarity on the NBA's relationship with Rwanda and urged the league to advocate for governance reforms rather than enabling a dictator who fosters a culture of fear. Critics argue that by continuing business with Kagame, the NBA legitimizes a ruler whose human rights abuses are far worse than those it opposes in the U.S. The senators wrapped up their letter to Silver by stating , "Playing ball with dictators and brutal regimes should not be the NBA's business model. Instead, the league should use its influence to advocate for governance reforms, including respect for the rule of law."
