On Friday, the body of another unidentified zama zama was recovered, bringing the death toll to nine since last month. Authorities have intensified Operation Vala Umgodi in the region, which has led to the arrest of over 1,300 individuals involved in illegal mining activities. A special task team was set up three weeks ago to assist with the rescue and recovery operations. However, safety concerns have delayed the implementation of phase three of the operation. In the meantime, community members have taken it upon themselves to assist by delivering food and water to those trapped underground. They have also been helping retrieve bodies of miners who reportedly died from hunger and dehydration. Pathology officials arrived at shaft 11 on Friday to collect the latest body. The reforms include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 , the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill , the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill , and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill . These bills have faced resistance from state governors and stakeholders. During a Channels Television Townhall on Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, emphasized that the goal of the reforms is to improve the economy and create shared prosperity rather than just increase revenue. “Our economy is underperforming,” Oyedele said. “Poverty is widespread, and growth is neither inclusive nor sustainable. The primary objective of these reforms is not to generate more revenue. It is to fix the economy for shared prosperity.” However, some northern leaders, like Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum, oppose the bills. Zulum warned that the reforms could harm the northern economy, urging President Tinubu to reconsider. “This is not opposition,” Zulum explained. “This bill will destroy the North entirely. They restricted movement in and out of the palace, causing concern among residents. This increase in security happened as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was set to escort Alhaji Munir Sanusi, the newly-appointed Wamban Kano, to his posting in Bichi. Bichi, one of the four emirates created under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, was later dissolved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. Reports indicate that the Bichi Emir’s Palace is also under tight security, with armed police officers stationed there. At the time of this report, the reasons for the heavy security presence remain unclear. Efforts to contact the Kano State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, have been unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable. Many traditional rulers and titleholders were left stranded at the Kano Emir’s Palace due to the security blockade.
