4 Foods That Boost Memory and Brain Health Drew Mcgee Aug 23, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Boost your brain health with foods like salmon, blueberries, broccoli, and dark chocolate, naturally supporting memory and cognitive function. Your brain is the control center of your body, and what you eat plays a significant role in keeping it healthy and sharp. Here are four foods that are scientifically proven to enhance memory and boost brain health: 1. Fatty Fish Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, and trout are among the best brain foods. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, these healthy fats are vital for building brain and nerve cells, which are essential for learning and memory. Omega-3s also reduce inflammation and slow age-related mental decline. Aim to incorporate fatty fish into your diet at least twice a week. 2. Blueberries Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which have been shown to improve brain function. These antioxidants accumulate in the brain, enhancing communication between brain cells. Studies suggest that regular consumption of blueberries can delay brain aging and improve memory. Add them to smoothies, oatmeal, or enjoy them as a snack. 3. Broccoli Broccoli is a brain-friendly vegetable, high in Vitamin K, which is crucial for brain health. Vitamin K helps in the formation of sphingolipids, a type of fat that's densely packed into brain cells. In addition to Vitamin K, broccoli contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, helping to protect the brain against damage. Make broccoli a regular part of your meals for a memory boost. 4. Dark Chocolate Dark chocolate, especially with a high cocoa content (70% or more), contains brain-boosting compounds like flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. These compounds enhance memory, increase blood flow to the brain, and improve focus. Remember, moderation is key—just a small square can give your brain the lift it needs. By incorporating these nutrient-dense foods into your diet, you can support your brain health and improve memory function. Start making these brain-boosting foods a regular part of your meals for long-term cognitive benefits. Top Nutrition Tips for Better Sleep, Backed by 15 Dietitian Experts H. Expert Britt Enock Oct 26, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Quality sleep is essential for overall well-being, supporting both physical recovery and mental clarity. Embracing restful sleep habits can help improve energy, mood, and health. According to fifteen registered dietitians, here are the top nutrition practices that allow you to sleep better. Everyone stresses over a good night's sleep as it is the most important factor in recovery and other emotional issues; there is often less attention placed on the fact of sleep quality which in fact is highly important. As popular diets seem to have, there are at least six ways that nutrition can be optimized to allow people to get better sleeps, including having a sufficient diet over the course of the day and choosing a calming drink before sleep but abstaining from alcohol. Here’s what you need to know about nutrition for sleep and some quick practical recommendations on the topic. 1.Make sure to accomplish your daily average caloric intake goals by the end of the day. The issue of caloric deficit is often ignored but rather affects sleep negatively. Dietitian Caroline Young, RD, says the "rest-and-digest" performance state, which is required for a decent sleep, can be spoiled by a failure to consume the right proportion of the major macronutrients – the carbohydrates. It is important to also know when to eat or how much time to leave between meals and sleep. Too much food before sleep can be uncomfortable while going to bed while hungry can also be a nuisance. Tip: You should usually have a light meal more than one hour before you go to sleep instead of a snack if you generally wake up hungry at night and would like to eat something before sleep. Thus people should ideally finish their main meals 2-3 hours before sleeping time. 2.Reduce on spiced foods Capsaicin - contained in red peppers, as well as other spices, can increase chances of heartburn, sweating and prevent reflexes from working while sleeping. Dani Lebovitz, MS, RDN, discourages having spicy meals in the evening hours for this reason, and recommends to not intensify the problem when lying in bed. 3.Include Nuts in Your Evening Routine Nuts, pistachios, almonds, walnuts – even a small amount can work wonders. They are known to increase melatonin production in the body, magnesium and zinc which all help with sleep. Snack Idea: Team with sleeping and performing scenes in movies or contemplate how you can get a good night's sleep – grab a small bag of nuts and eat it before bed. 4.Do Not Consume Stimulants and Depressants in Heavy Doses Due to sleep-inducing qualities, avoid caffeine at least 6 hours before sleeping because it will most likely make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Alcohol has a calming effect at first but consumption has been known to disturb REM cycles. The following day can become disjointed and tiresome as a result. 5.Focus on Plant-Based Foods Plant-based foods such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and oats are rich in fiber and promote the release of serotonin which plays a role in sleep. Above normal fiber intake, coupled with very few sugar and saturated fats, has been associated with deeper stages of slow wave sleep. Ashley KItchens, MPH, RDN, also notes that magnesium rich foods such as leafy greens, legumes and grains will also facilitate relaxation. 6.Use Alcohol free drinks befere sleep Some alcohol free beverages enhance quality sleep. Below are a few to try: Bone Broth: Bone sugary broth is a source of high glycine content which can induce faster sleep. Warm Milk or Turmeric Milk: They both are a source of tryptophan, the amino acid that is best for sleep; Turmeric milk does come with additional anti inflammatory properties. Tart Cherry Juice: A small shot of this juice before sleep increases the levels of melatonin in the body, hence encouraging more sleep. With these nutrition guidelines and practices, sleep performance can be improved greatly. People have an easier time falling asleep and staying during the whole night to recharge for the day ahead. Africa Local News Uganda Suicide Note left by Lt. Ariho’s Final Moments Mbeki edmond Jan 3, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The crime scene of Lt Ariho's suicide in Nakirebe, Mpigi district The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is mourning the death of Lt. Amon Ariho, who tragically took his own life, leaving behind a heartfelt note exposing alleged corruption within the military. The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, expressed deep sadness over the incident, saying: “I am personally hurt by the suicide of our young officer, Lt. Ariho. He died because of the corruption Mzee (President Museveni) and I have been talking about for a long time now. His blood will be avenged, and the thieves will pay.” What Happened? Lt. Ariho, from the UPDF Engineers Brigade, was found dead at a football field in Nakirebe, near Wakiso and Mpigi districts. Witnesses reported that he parked his black car (UBJ 493Q), dispersed players on the field, and used an SMG rifle to end his life. Before his death, Lt. Ariho left a detailed letter addressed to the UPDF leadership. He blamed corruption, particularly targeting a superior, Maj. Ogwang, for his struggles. Lt. Ariho’s Suicide Note In his note, Lt. Ariho praised the CDF’s leadership but highlighted grievances, including blocked projects, unpaid debts, and mistreatment of engineers. Below is part of his note: UPDF FAMILY Dear CDF, I want to thank you for your good leadership, and may God continue blessing you. I hope this message finds you well. Kindly visit the Engineers Brigade and review some issues. I joined the Army in 2013, completed basic training, and later undertook cadet training after a few years. I have been serving as a Lieutenant. As I leave, these are the issues I would like to discuss: Eng. Ogwang is the cause of my demise. After being deployed to the Engineers Brigade, he dismissed every engineer who was working within the Central region, even without allowing them to serve under him for a single day. Please track the record of works completed before Maj. Ogwang took over. For instance, visit Mpigi District and Butambala. Specifically, at Gombe Hospital in Butambala, Maj. Ogwang found a block project already constructed, worth 100 million UGX. He accused us of being thieves, claiming we made blocks for sale. This is untrue; the previous leader was strategic and planned for the future. Maj. Ogwang did not purchase any blocks in Gomba District because he found a soft landing. However, he failed to settle the debts he inherited, and these are now weighing heavily on us. Dear CDF, harmful propaganda and selfish interests can lead to unfair treatment of good people while promoting the wrong elements. I urge you to visit the ground and make proper changes. I, Lt. Amon Ariho (RO/13999), am leaving this world. I kindly request that my body be taken home to Rukiga District, Kamwezi, Kibanda, Katungu. Dear CDF, I humbly request that you take good care of the children I leave behind, as their father is no longer alive. Source: Chimpreports Related Posts Suicide Note left by Lt. Africa War in DRC DR.Congo African Court Set to Begin Trial Against Rwanda Over Human Rights Abuses in DRC Mbeki edmond Jan 1, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, based in Arusha, Tanzania, has confirmed that it will begin the trial against Rwanda on February 12, 2025. This trial follows a complaint filed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in September 2023, accusing Rwanda of committing severe human rights abuses in the eastern part of the DRC. The news about this trial was announced at the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers in Mbuji-Mayi. During this meeting, the Minister of State for Justice, Constant Mutamba, provided a detailed report, emphasizing that this legal action marks a significant step in the DRC's pursuit of justice and human rights. It is seen as a boost to the country's standing in the international community. Other international courts are also taking action against Rwanda. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reopened its investigation into Rwanda's crimes in Congo, and the East African Community (EAC) Court of Justice is pursuing its own legal case against Rwanda for violating the organization's treaty. In response to Rwanda's aggression in eastern Congo, the Congolese government has implemented a strategy focused on four key areas: strengthening the military to defend the country’s borders, using diplomacy to gain international support and expose the aggression, raising awareness to fight misinformation, and using the judicial system to hold those responsible accountable and seek reparations.
