A twice-yearly injectable HIV preventive drug, Lenacapavir, is set to reach over 2 million people by 2027 Dec 20, 2024 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp Copy link Lenacapavir, shows over 99% efficacy in preventing HIV Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injection, shows great promise as a tool to prevent HIV, boasting a near-perfect success rate in blocking infections.Currently approved in the US and other countries for treating drug-resistant HIV in adults, lenacapavir has proven highly effective in two clinical trials when used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Over the next three years, around two million people in countries supported by PEPFAR and the Global Fund, including Kenya, are expected to gain access to this innovative treatment. Approval of lenacapavir for PrEP use will depend on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), national drug regulators, and World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. WHO has previously recommended various HIV prevention methods. In 2015, oral PrEP using tenofovir disoproxil fumarate was advised for those at high risk. In 2021, the dapivirine ring was suggested for women at substantial risk. By 2022, WHO endorsed long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) for individuals at significant risk of HIV. CAB-LA involves injections every eight weeks after an initial two-dose series four weeks apart. Lenacapavir offers a simpler alternative, requiring just two injections per year. During the PURPOSE 1 trial, none of the 2,138 women who received lenacapavir contracted HIV. In the PURPOSE 2 trial, which included men and gender-diverse participants, only two out of 2,179 became infected, achieving a success rate exceeding 99%. This long-acting injection is easier to adhere to compared to daily pills, making it a superior option. "We cannot achieve a sustainable response to HIV without rapidly reducing the 1.3 million new HIV infections that occur each year worldwide. Lenacapavir offers a potentially enormous opportunity to transform the impact of HIV programmes," said Dr. John Nkengasong, US Global AIDS Coordinator and head of PEPFAR. The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) announced this as part of its 2025 budget plan. On Saturday, February 16, 2025, FERWAFA presented its new budget, which will be over 15.2 billion Frw. This is a 56% increase compared to the previous year. In 2025, 25% of this budget—about 1.39 billion Frw—will go toward developing football in Rwanda. This includes youth tournaments, training coaches, monitoring academies, and supporting Bayern Munich’s academy. Bayern’s academy, which has been operating in Rwanda for two years, will use 627.6 million Frw for children’s welfare, staff salaries, training sessions, and other needs. While Belgium’s Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team pulled out due to safety worries, 14 other teams—including Lotto-Dstny Devo Team from Belgium—took part. The race director, Kamuzinzi Freddy, assured that everything ran smoothly. “Security was not an issue. Some foreign teams and media outlets had concerns, but as you saw, everything was safe. However, the Frenchman was fined 200 Swiss Francs (approx. 315,000 Rwandan Francs) for unsporting behavior and might also face disciplinary action from UCI. Organizers Say the Incident Won’t Impact Rwanda’s World Championship Preparations Speaking to Rwanda TV, Tour du Rwanda Director Kamuzinzi Freddy insisted that the Stage 7 controversy did not damage the reputation of the race, as the weather was beyond their control. “I wouldn’t say it affected the Tour du Rwanda. Of course, it was disappointing for Rwandans who were expecting an exciting finale, but it wasn’t our decision. We follow UCI regulations.” Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire added that UCI officials were impressed by Rwanda’s preparations for the 2025 World Championships but noted that the Stage 7 issues highlighted areas for improvement. “They told us we are well-prepared. They were impressed. But, of course, we have to keep working.
